Carb overflow won't stop dripping (85 Honda Xlx 250)

So I brought this old Xlx 250 the other day (twin carb version) and all is going sweet with it apart from a pritty steady drip from both carb overflows..

I tried all the obvious fixes- drain plug screws were tight, nothing stuck in float valve seats, rubber tips in good nick, Floats moving freely with no cracks in them, floats set just below horizontal so shouldnt be a problem there... but the fuckers still keep dripping!

    any ideas?

Also when i had them to bits there was a jet missing in the left hand carb (the smaller jet below the main jet) Anyone know if this is normal?

My bike has the same set up, and it had exactly the same issue. Rubber needles for the float valves may look good but they wont be. Common problem. SME motorcycles have them in stock for 10 bucks each from memory. It can also be from the float levels being set wrong, 14mm I think. But my bet its the float valves.

Also the second carb has the idle circut blanked as its not used at idle so looks like a jet is missing but its not.

    cheers for quick reply!

Right will try out the new needles. Also which one do you mean by second carb? the one with the empty jet hole on this bike is the left hand one if your sitting on the bike.. Out of intrest do you know off hand what size the stock jets are/ what are you running?

    cheers

On my bike the LH when sitting on the bike is the primary. So if you watch the linkage you will see one will open before the other. Thats how it should be.

If your in Auckland take them to SME with the bowls off and he will tell you if anything is missing. If it runs ok I doubt it. Mine was 105 primary carb and 108 secondry carb for the mains. I would think yours will be different.
