Ive just been on Trude Me looking at all the unbelievebly cheap video cameras!
what kind of software will I get to edit footage and make some You Tubeable productions. Im running windows 7

If the camera is MP4 you need to use (buy) something like Sony Vegas. If it's AVI / AVIx then you can edit with windows movie maker for free.

I have a Go Pro which is MP4 & I have to convert it to AVI to edit in WMM, losing quality in the process.

Simplest way is to buy a camera which allows you to do basic editing without a computer, you can do it on the run. Then it's just a case of waiting for it to upload.

Go HD too, the picture quality is mint.

It looks like it has the whistles & bells but only 4 x digital zoom & it is MP4, designed for Apple quick time or at least adopted by Apple. No indication of battery life & you would need to stick a bigger memory card in it.

3m waterproof is basically water resistant IMHO. You can put a lot of extra pressure on housings etc underwater just by moving them fast or banging them.

I think those cameras have been discussed here in recent months but I cannot remember the outcome.

What kind of movies you wanna make?

Their are some very good & cheap POV cameras available ( point of view ) which you can stick almost anywhere.

For me editing is the biggest thing, I'm still trying to get my head around it. 3 hours of video becomes very intimidating when your trying to get 3 minutes of highlights. I watch TV with a whole new appreciation now.

If you have a digital camera that shoots a bit of video, do so, and see if you can edit it with Windows 7, Movie maker should be on their if not download it from Microsoft or www.downloads.com. Also check to see if your version will do MP4 aka (H.264).

How in depth do you want to edit? If you're just wanting to take some shots, and piece it together in a chronological order with the odd transition and a title, Movie Maker will do that.

Higher up on the scale something like Pinnacle Studios adds in a few more functions such as basic sound control mapping (you can "draw" the volume levels through the movie), and extra functions such as jitter correction, gamma and color correction etc. Also basic green screen stuff.

Higher up there still would be something like Final Cut Pro (do they still make that?) It would allow you to do multi layered video & audio, dubbed down into surround sound. You'd have full control over the audio panning, with audio filters. Video wise you can do overlays, motion paths, and more advanced green screen stuff.

I've got an old sony handycam that will film in widescreen - 720 x 6-- something odd, in uncompressed AVI. x10 zoom with paris hilton grade night vision. Records onto a digital tape and I capture onto a computer using a Pinnacle capture card (Firewire system). The camera is not small though, and the file format works out 250-300mb a minute of video. High enough quality though it looks alright when projected onto a screen.

I dub my edits into single uncompressed .avi files, then load them into Ulead DVD Factory, which allows you to make custom menus and multiple paged titles. It'll then render it down to a file size that will fit a single layer burnable DVD. Or dual layer DVD if you have a dual layer burner and want to pay for those expensive dual layer blanks.

You loose quality burning onto single layer though - since it has to reduce the video quality to fit it on a 4gb disk.

For you tube, you won't need to worry as a small file size is all thats needed.

Don't forget, if you are uploading to Youtube you need music that is available for free usage.

Websites like Soundclick.com and Garageband.com have many free to use mp3s that Youtube will allow.
