Call me cynical, but don't the majority of the students involved in protests seem to be taking courses that have debatable value in terms of employment or benefit to the country?.

University was originally meant to be a centre of learning, debate and higher education dedicated to turning out people who could think and reason, - not the trade training centres, they have turned into, the last 30 years!
    Polytechs are for that!

Pillock I'm referring to professional engineers, scientists, doctors and the like. All professions that require thought or reason. Sorry if I've offended anyone by leaving out lawyers and accountants

Buggered if I know lol, but some of the courses you have to wonder about. I mean who could forget the part-tax payer funded trip for hip hop studies....

    I'm unbiased too

When I was studying (funnily enough I still am, kinda) I was all kinds of pissed off that not only did I have to fund my education, but I also had to pay to belong to the compulsory student union, who would then use my money to publish shit like Cracuum, or organise some noisy bleeding heart campaign in the quad during the year's most demanding lecture on organic chemistry.

Worse still they just breed the worst of the politicians of the future.

    Screw compulsory student unions.
    Keep on chooglin'

    Sadly, I studied.

    Did pass, however.

Perhaps its just me. But unions, groups, clubs and associations in general that require compulsory membership do not run well with me.

I don't want funded, unresearched crap. I have no need for spam.
Student Unions are a fucking joke. Its the universities job to provide the vital services - remember after all that they are competing with other universities in NZ. Its called "student services". And 9/10 its funded from the Uni.

On the same note however I picked a fight with IPENZ once. Asking them why I should pay exorbitant fees for something that isn't really useful (as my other free memberships) or even internationally recognized (as cheaper alternatives). Turned out at the time IPENZ was more accountants than engineers.

Perhaps I am one of those poor sods whom believe we are in control of our own lives?

    Stu,
Membership of IPENZ is useful for some things, like certifiable project work or cross-crediting if you spend a spell in the UK for example but after that, its value drops in relation to cost. I was never a member of IPENZ as I came from the UK but I dropped the UK equivalent because there was no direct connection to the work I was doing in NZ and it was bloody expensive.

See, you do have freedom of choice.... pay up or walk away from it

I'm a student member of IPENZ, work full time for a engineering firm and study part-time.

I just joined up as it's free (at the moment) and the general idea is that it's good for the CV etc

Also I believe my firm pays for membership.

And this is the whole point of the thread. It should be a personal choice.
