I really don't understand the 'hype' personally. I'm a long term Apple consumer, but you'd think it was a cancer cure from the amount of press it gets/angst it causes.

I have a $49 nokia mobile phone than more than adequately meets my needs.

I do enjoy my iPod and Ipad as gaming/entertainment devices too.

Don't understand why people would buy apple when their are so many other products that do the same thing for a lot less money and are a lot less restrictive. I am considering getting my first smartphone. But i only use my current phone as an alarm and i only want a smart phone for its gps tracking apps so it seems like a bit of a waste.

49% of smart phone sales are android. Apple only has about 30% of the market. (was on the news, not sure if that's NZ or overseas or worldwide).

As far as the fone goes - I agree, other hardware is mainly based on the software acquisition path I started down more than 20 years ago.

Parents recently purchased an iMac and a Macbook Pro.

Macbook pro randomly crashes/restarts. Ring apple and get told to ring another number that costs per/min. After Dad told them to get fucked (politely) he takes it in to a shop where they find its a hardware fault.

iMac chews through batteries randomly. Constantly loses mouse keyboard/connection. Logitech mouse fixes that. Couldnt get the bluetooth settings showing up so another call to apple where again they direct us to the pay per min help where again we tell them to stick it and they eventually give us a keyboard combo to reset the machine and get the bluetooth settings to show.

Apple support is shit. Apple hardware is shit.

It is nice that the iMac renders my blender projects a few seconds quicker than my PC but its not worth all the bullshit to get there!

I realise this has nothing to do with this thread but its why i will never buy apple.

let me know when you find one... Galaxy S II is a similar price & doesn't do the same but does similar, might be "less restrictive tho" but nothing a jailbreak doesn't fix

Cheers for the feedback and thoughts. I personally wouldn't have considered an apple product a while a go... now I'm more open to the idea. Battery life improving on the iphone seems pretty good to me. My current phone lasts around a week (it's switched off at night) but there's no way I'm expecting anything near that from these smartphones. I like the idea of the wifi on the phones and having an cell phone/ipod in one seems pretty cool.

I think it mentioned this iphone 4s is going to be more of a 'global phone' in that you can travel with it to most countries and it should not have issues with it being on certain frequencies etc. That personally appeals to me. Having to sort out global roaming type things suck.

I have heard mixed reviews of those top android phones like the galaxy s2.

The android phones seem quite heavily 'customizable', which to some peoplewould be awesome - I kind of want one that just works perfectly straight out of the box so to speak. And doesn't need certain apps to get the most out of the phone. Maybe I've been misguided on this aspect of android phones... who knows. I just wanna have a play on them new smartphones and see what tickles my fancy.

I never used an Apple iPhone before so I wouldn't know but your thoughts on Android phones aren't far. I do in a sense like the "out of the box" thing so I keep mine not rooted (jailbreak or whatever), however I have took some time to customise it for my needs: such as downloading this and that applications. Like someone said, Android is highly customisable (and flexible). I guess that is one point of having a smartphone, to fit to your lifestyle, usage and living.

If you want something that works perfectly just out of the box a $49 Nokia would be the perfect choice Just kidding.

If you can make it on Kiwibiker you can make it anywhere.

I've had about 25 years of full time, high volume, professional graphics business use. Since well before windows had colour sync - which was the main reason to choose an Apple for pre-press back then. Over that time I'd rate my customer satisfaction as high.

Fuck yeah - it's a telephone. The camera is much better than an iPhone 4 too.

Not really interested in the iPhone4s, but then, I don't own Apple products and don't like them (in a lot of ways). Presumably I'll end up playing with a customer's one at some point.

From a business point of view, I've found the Androids fucking terrible. Each one you pick up is different, and I think I've had a 0% success rate in getting them fully functioning with Exchange Servers. Random security errors when all the ducks are in a row and iPhones and others have no issues. Then some models lack basic things like syncing tasks... they're a right nightmare.

Been using "smartphones" for years. Supported imates made by HTC before HTC properly entered the market, used several Nokia E series, and finally I'm on Blackberry. Been most satisfied with Blackberry, even going as far as syncing notes (haven't found another device that does), plus numerous other little things like being able to multi-task, copy info from here to there (no, plenty of other devices don't let you move info wherever you want) etc. Still, it's overkill for your average user, as it's coupled to a Blackberry server etc, which no normal user needs.
