hi this is nicks race report from barber and the trip so far
Hi all,
after about 24hrs of flying and airports we made to barber raceway. first impression of the place “wow” this place is amazing!!. the only flat part of the track is the start straight, but even the end of that goes down hill. turn 2 has around 60 ft elevation change and not one of the corners are flat, a real motorbike race track. the facility is huge. the barber museum is rite on the edge of track looking over turns 5,6,7 and down the back straight. Friday was practice and by the second practice i was 2nd quickest then the rest of the days practice was spent riding around slower guys as there were round 65+ bikes on the track in our group which was madness and unsafe with the many varied bike speeds out there.
Saturday we had morning warm up, super pole then after lunch my first 500 premier race. luckily the organisers gave us our own super pole which involved a warm up lap and one fast lap to determine our qualifying positions. to my surprize i got 2nd behind the current champ and local and in front of 500cc world champion Kevin schwantz who was third. i was stunned!! over lunch we made some setup changes to the bike which i knew would make us go faster. Race 1: got a average start and was placed 5th at the end of lap 1 behind schwantz and the Dutch superbike champ and the two local fast guys. i got my head down and charged hard working my way up to 2nd at one point then back to 3rd. one guy crashed out in front of me then i got caught up with back markers also did schwantz and Pat Mooney (local fast guy) who had a coming together with a slower rider causing both to run of track. i finished the race in third. formula 500 i was gridded on the third row but i knew if i got a good start i could win. on lap 3 i took the lead and started to get away with a 30 metre lead until our needle jet we made up started to fail so i had to pull out of the race. bugger!.
Sunday we had a warm up then a super pole again. we made some more changes to the setup of the again, i sat by myself, i was going to win this super pole!! out i go last on track done my thing, back into pits with pole to my name. oh yeh i was pumped!!. first race i lined up with schwantz next to me 2nd fastest so i knew a good start was in order. well about 6 guys jumped the start which threw my good start out the window but i was still 5th outer turn 1. the next 3 laps were the best I've ever done lapping 1.6 seconds faster than the day before chasing down schwantz, Pat Mooney and the other local fast guy setting the fastest times of the weekend up to 4th then 3rd with the next two in my sights. then outa turn one making a pass for the lead one of my spark plugs fell out of the magneto, dangled into the drive belt pulling the lead off the spark plug spitting it into the belly pan of the bike!! race over!! i don’t think I've ever been so guttered about a race in my life. but as they say “that's racing”
the second formula 500 race i had to work hard to chase down the leader on a 2-stroke 500cc but managed to get past and clear off and win the race by 8 seconds. so we had our downs but more ups and some very proud moments and found my new favorate race track. words cant describe the place, its simply amazing!! off to Daytona next weekend to take on the banking and Doug Polen.
just got to Daytona beach today after 10hrs on the road to find that its bike week here so there's heaps of bikes and state law here you don't need a helmet!! heaps of Harley's and choppers doing laps up and down so I'm going to try find a scooter hire and take the piss ha ha
just got to look at daytona race track today. looks awsome and the banking is huge!! also just freshly re-surfaced but the in-field still old surface and flat with no camber on the corners. we get one practice session then racing after lunch which is going to be tuff. got two races after lunch, 500 premier and formula 500
