    1) my name (middle initial different, otherwise the same)
    2) Living at the address I had up until 12 months ago
    3) Same Date of Birth
    4) Phone number as per the address listed in 2) above (while I was there).

Now I'm not too concerend at this point - things seem to be working out, and all the right noises are being made, but it raises the question. If there is some critter out there doing this stuff... what can I do to him?

He's possibly impacting on my credit rating, doing a number of things etc - and I'll be chasing the banks and various debt management agencies surrounding that... but I want to nail the little bastard's hide to the wall if it turns out he's doing this stuff.

What would I possibly charge him with?

    Cheers

There's a guy thats been on TV lately (20/20 or 60 minutes) who has had the same problem for years and years.
They even found the guy thats doing it as well, (a crim) and he don't care.

The poor buggar is desperate for the twat to stop... he may have to even change his name. As he has been issued with speeding/parking fines and other things.
And the cops.. what are they doing about it.... well not a lot.

So mate get onto it straight away and stop the credit card on the wanker...
Have a special password that ONLY you know for all your banks if and when someone applies for another credit card in YOUR name.

Much of the problem lies the banks and financial instutions reluctance to prosecute these people. They just don't want the general public to know that their security has been breached with the result of loss of confidence from their customers.

They just pay up the losses and want you to forget it. The down side of this is that we pay anyway via bank fees etc.

Yeah well I've never been real good about keeping my mouth closed and... the upside is that the card was issued from a bank I have NEVER had an account with. So theyt're not really able to threaten my business too much... or offer me incentives to keep my mouth shut (and if they do they'll have to be GOOD incentives... like new GSX type incentives.

There is also the not so insignificant issue of credit rating being affected. As duckman (can I call you "Ducky?" ) may have alluded to in his post - Baycorp might get all manner of BS across their desk and in the absence of a retraction by those issuing the offending letter... the credit rating issue is a big one.

The fcact it's a different bank makes the question of how he got all my details more interesting (although I could do it to someone else - all the details are available if you only look in the right places...). I'm waiting on them pulling the credit card application so I can see what details were provided - and what form of ID specifically...

This will get worse before it gets better... maybe - buit I'm looking forward to it...

You would think the bank would work with the cops on this with you.
You and them in a little room with some tapes of him chating to bank tellers till you go "Hay! Thats soandso"
Or maby you dont, maby he gets run over when crossing his lounge?

Don't think it'll stop until bank ID requirements are as sophisticated as their banking systems ... at the moment they are whizzing our funds about electronically but are still dependant on paper manifestations from us to set up & ID accounts ................... now if we had to give a sample or something to open an account .... .... sorry - baaad idea ..

Said crim moaned to me the other day that he's got driving convictions that are not his, he didn't notice the sarcasm in my voice when I said "oh, man that's really bad, you must be gutted, must be really bad to be blamed for what someone else has done".

    How about this one:
There's two David Cohens who write freelance in NZ.
The other one works for the Business Review Weekly - I've spoken to him on the phone but never met him. he's in Wellywood, but we do get each others 'fan' mail. (he pisses more people off than I do).
Coincidently we also leased apple computers from the same finance company.
When I got around to checking my statements I discovered I'd been paying both of them off for quite some time.

The finance compay had a cheque for full refund and a BIG appology to me the next day.

    Check them statements.
