Thread: BMW parts?

Well the mufflers would be shiny wouldn't they - plenty of time to polish them on the trailer waiting for the other bikes to catch up.

Sadly, i'm running out of things to polish on the bike, so I might start cleaning and polishing the trailer next . . . .

As long as you are not polishing your knob in public it's all good.

The Blue tow vehicle could most definitely do with some love, and heaven knows it deserves plenty. It's been very patient.

    Starter motor?

Mine is still in bits, but the engine is ready to be fired up, only problem is the starter motor is toast. Is there anywhere I can get my hands on one?

There are a few differences, pre 81 models have a different number of teeth on the drive.
They now do geared starter motors which are lighter than the old Bosch ones.
I bought one of these http://www.euromotoelectrics.com/BMW...p/bmw-str1.htm for my racer project.
post from US was about $48.00 US....they will post two for that price.
The genuine BMW was more expensive....made ironically in Poland....
the one shown is probably a Chinese one....looks better made...thats the one I'm running.
Whats wrong with the old one?...they are pretty solid but the brass bush wears.

pm sidecarbob, he has someone local to him that does a conversion using a readily available Toyota starter motor which he said is far superior to the stock BMW starter

Whaaaa...you mean the magnets aren't glued in?
Sounds like a better idea than the BMW ones I mentioned.....if only I had known earlier....
Still the Chinese one has done well over 10 starts with no issues and its light.

    That's what I'm talking about!

One of my objectives is to do the bike as cheaply as possible. It's easy to bung cash at a bike and make something special, but I want to produce a really tasty and very usable custom on a low budget, and that means using a lot of stock stuff like wheels. I'm also trying to do as much as I can myself because then I can genuinely say that I built it as well as saving cash.

I think an airhead is a bloody good basis for that because they are so incredibly well made and bloody simple and easy to work on, plus there seem to be plenty of parts available cheap. The more time I spend on it the more impressed I am and wonder why the hell they are such cheap bikes.
