    The Green Thing

In the line at the supermarket, the cashier told an older woman that she should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren't good for the environment.

The woman apologized to her and explained, "We didn't have the green thing back in my day."

The cashier responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment."

She was right -- our generation didn't have the green thing in its day.

Back then, we returned milk bottles and soft drink bottles to the shop. The shop sent them back to the factory to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled.

But, we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery shop and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks.

But, she was right; we didn't have the green thing in our day.

Back then, we washed the baby's nappies because we didn't have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry the clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing.

But that young lady is right; we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a hanky (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Victoria .
In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us...
When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap.
Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push hand mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working, so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.

But she's right; we didn't have the green thing back then.

We drank from a tap when we were thirsty, instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water.
We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull.

But, we didn't have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the tram, train or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked, instead of turning their mums into a 24-hour taxi service.
We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

    Isn't it sad?

The current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were … just because we didn't have the green thing back then.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

Pretty sure we have 240 volts. Not sure how it was in your day.

most of the "old fashioned" recycling stopped in the 80th.
We used to carry our own shopping bags, bought beer in crates, and paper was returned to the mill for petty cash. And than all that stopped, and it was cool to buy shit made in china thanks to free trade agreements, and suddenly it was to expensive to produce in our own countries, after all we could not all drop to the cost of a Chinese laborer.
And if we cut down on monopolies we would have choice, and cheaper prices, and if people did not buy the latest shit they'd be loosers. Yuppie years - if anyone remembers.

I pity everyone under 20. It is not so much us (who may or may not do the green thing) but our collective governments that truly don't give a shit as to what they leave behind to the young ones.
There is no social sense in any of the worlds governments and certainly not in any of the large businesses. And the "Green Thing" is only going to happen in a society that will allow for all to prosper, for which a healthy environment is a prerequisite.

We might have walked more, used more hand power, and recycled, but then all of the industrial world had no problem to start using the washmachine, drive the very large car (and create ever larger carparks), buy water in bottles because what comes from the Tap in Onehunga just tasted like Liquid polyaluminium chloride.

again I pity the young ones

I was going to just reply and say 'Fuck the environment' because I really dont care

that aside, you could have turned around and pointed out to her that the previous generations were working hard to build and develop all the things that her fat lazy ass takes for granted in her day to day work, and asked her what exactly HER generation is doing to better the earth for the next generation...

But she'd probably just smile and point dumbly to the little green bags .. . .

I'd be really interested to know the full 'energy budget' for a reuseable grocery bag over an average life cycle.

Compared to the tiny energy budget of a plastic bag - that I then reuse as a bin liner

PS - NOTHING breaks down in landfill. Not even fruit. Exposure to oxyegen and UV fucks plastic bags PDQ.

    That is all

But they did it so well, not like the plastic shit we have now. Instead of good old lead we now have lots of benzene, a known carcinogen, which unlike lead is harmful in ANY amount....

good ol lead is a known killer, when lead accumulates in the human body it cannot be purged.
Lead in old paint, lead in old petrol, lead seamed tin cans that you used to buy baked beans in, bad, bad, bad.
