    Intercoms?

Looking for recommendations for intercoms - rider to pillion, and bike to bike.
Preferably something that you can plug your ipod into aswell.

I had a rider to pillion set many years ago which worked OK, but was limited by uncomfortable ear piece. After a while you just had to take it off, which made long rides a no go...

Since I found my Sennheiser 'earbuds' recently, I wondered if any intercom manufacturers had linked their intercom with this style of earpiece?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

    cheers
    Scott

My Friend has a set of these Which we used going up to cape reinga, worked really well, could talk and listen to music at the same time. The only issue with connectivity was when they were out of sight of each other and about 1km apart.
Personally it made the helmet uncomfortable for me to wear, but that was due to a lack of fine tuning the position of the earpieces. With more time spent, they would be fine

I noticed there's a heap of bluetooth ones on ebay at the moment. I'm just tinkering with a set I got ages ago from here. I've put some better sounding speakers (I'm a bit fussy) and putting a different plug on the end so I can use the PTT button to control the music on my phone. The way I see it, if I'm riding with someone, I'll chat them them if I'm bored so I don't need it to have both.

If I had the money though, I'd buy a bluetooth kit.

Bought a set of the BT intercom 'bluetooth' intercomm's from tardme. Reasonable price, and they can be set to connect to a bluetooth device, and other units outside the 'paired ones'... you pair them on first use, and the 'Master' unit can connect to other units beside the pillion rider.
We have ridden for about 9hrs and they were still going fine. Only criticism was the chargers were not NZ pugged, so I had to aquire a USB charger and it works brilliantly.. other advantage is you can top up or charge from a PC if needed.

Check out a brand of BT headset called "Sena SMH10" which does everything you want. Website is www.senabluetooth.co.nz where you can also buy a spare helmet clamp set that allows you to plug in your own earbuds. I've done this using the Plugs4Lugz custom stereo earplugs. Works great.

We have a BlueAnt F4 set up.

I mostly use the F4's to listen to music and take calls on the bike, I don't often talk to anybody on it as I find it far to distracting to discuss anything while riding. I play a lot of music on my cell phone-F4 set up, when the phone goes it gives a chirp then automatically put the music on hold and answers the phone. With a full face the voice quality is almost perfect at 100 kph with a open face I have to slow down to 80 before I can be understood. The Music quailty is very good and very loud, even with ear plugs in over the sound of my not so quiet Harley. The Blueant batteries last for 10 hours listening to music and I think I read they last for 30 on standby. My cell phone battery is flat after playing music for 6 hours over the blue tooth connection. The range of the intercom is probably 0.5 to 1km line of sight, but it is a line of sight device. If you want to talk over miles and miles then a PTT 560mhz CB and headset is the way to go.

My F4 actually works better than I thought it would. If it got busted I would definately get another one the same.

About the only thing that is a bit of a pain is remembering how many times you have to push and hold the control button for to get the thing to power up and down, start and stop playing music and start and stop the intercom. It comes with a wee wallet card that lives in the glove box of the bike.

I have a pair of Bose and Sennhieserneiser ear phones, the Bose are soooooooo much better, but they were $100 more than the Senn'r ones.

Yeah tried bluetooth for bike-bike and just wouldn't bother again. Around the twisties or if you get separated by traffic etc and lose line of site its back to a reset. Bloody nuisance.

So, I got a set of uniden vhf from Tricky Dicky with cables and ptt from Mike Pinfold pinfold@xtra.co.nz works very well and range is several kms. While you have to press to talk (yes, thats what ptt means ) its not too much of a hassle unless you really want to be a pain and talk ALL the time . . . Stick the ptt button to the left hand mirror stem so can reach with index finger, cable goes up the sleeve and easily detaches from ptt when you get off. And yes, you do need to unplug it - the biggest disadvantage of these systems, but well worth it imho.

Charge overnight and fully charged lasts all day.

I'm sure Mike will have plugs to put your iPod thingy in too, if you must listen to music while you ride . . for me the Hornet makes all the right sounds that I want to listen to

I've got a Sena SMH-10 blue tooth head set set up coming, will do a review at some point. Done a fair amount of research on this style of set up and the Sena SMH-10 constantly gets good reviews and has been touted as having the best speakers of them all, will find out what that means soon enough.

Every time I look at motorbike intercoms I come to the same realisation that they all have the same defect - they allow people to talk to me. I prefer the absence of human intervention when I ride.

Just be careful what mindless dribble you could be letting inside your helmet that might disrupt your enjoyment.
