    Unhappy House insurance

Bugger me days. My insurance bill 4 the house arrived 2day. Well we have had no claims, quiet little town so minimal increase, yes?! Away from Chch & the shit re earthquakes so expecting no biggish surprises. Well our insurance bill has doubled. Yes doubled! Lost 4 words!

Annoying when the companies make huge profits annually,no major payouts since 1931 Napier quakes, and the reserves need topping up asap, sure the quakes have had an effect but you have to wonder.

yeah it is a risk game and you are the helpless victim. Being in Wellington area we have been paying a premium for our quake and high wind risk already. The Insurance companies, and almost everyone else got it wrong in thinking Christchurch was quake safe, and yet we get stung - again, after already paying for our quake risk.
I can understand a bit of adjustment like them saying they can no-longer consider anywhere in NZ quake safe, but double, they are taking the piss, doing a Fonterra.

I went through this exercise recently. Rather a steep increase in insurance cover for the house/contents and also the car.

The simple approach was to phone around the insurance companies and get quotes. I discovered that they appear VERY keen to attract new clients.
After getting a very sensible price from Tower insurance, I called my current insurer back and "surprise, surprise" they could shapen their pencil and provide a MUCH more sensible price.

Read the fine print in your contents policy and then make a claim. Were they big, expensive, collectable words?

So why did AMI have to go cap in hand to the Government? Maybe because they werent charging enough to allow for events such as the Christchurch earthquake?

I got handed my house premium on Wednesday and it looks like about an 8% increase. I can live with that!
