    Superstock 600 New Zealand Championship

    Pinched from the NZSBK website:

"Rumours abound that there MAY not be a Superstock 600 Championship in 2012. For the class to run there must be six entries at the first round of the Championship at Christchurch on seventh of January . The class was set up for a more "affordable" form of 600 class racing. However it appears more riders have choosen the " 600 Supersport" route where more modifications are allowed.

MNZ Road Race Commissioner Peter Ramage has asked for riders to contact him or any member of the commission about whether they will be competing in the class. (Contact Peter Ramage (Chairman) - 027 358 0318 Neil Smith - 03 578 6208 a/h Graeme Billington - 07 574 5579 a/h)."

I've entered my thou' in Clubbies down South but I'm happy to line it up in Superstock 600 if it helps.........all GSXR's look much the same and at my pace no one will even know the difference.

The only way these classes will work is to make them the only national class. No one wants to win a class when it looks like your only just managing top 5s.

The rules wont make it to the main classes because modifying bikes allows parity between brands because bikes are all on different production cycles so there is always going to be a bike that is at a huge advantage.

Suzuki NZ, Honda NZ dont want to have there factory bikes getting wasted so they would pull out and without there support there would be no superbike class.

A shame for sure if it dies.
The 1000 Superstock class didnt get of the ground last season (twas a lonely time out there).
Just one class with tuning/modifying restrictions is the way to go, and bringing it in line with the Aussie rules.

But which Aussie rules? ASBK run a two tired system as well, then there are the different rules between ASBK and Formula-Xtreme.

Edit: it's a tough ask to start a new class. The same faces rock up for the national's every year so to start a new class or set new rules pretty much everyone has to either do major work or buy a new bike. Tough all round.

    My 2c:

Start setting out the rules NOW for a consolidated 600 class to come into effect in 2 years time.

Standard engines with pipes, fueling etc like what we have with super stock now.
    Supersport rules for suspension.
    Same tyre rules as supersport.

Set up a tiered system where older bikes can have more mods eg. 3 year old models can do more to the engine, 5 year + models can use F2 rules etc. - I am just making this up on the spot so maybe there are issues with this. The idea would be that if you have just blown a lot of money on a supersport bike then you don't have to detune it in order to race it. Something like this would help transition everyone into the new rules.

The current setup of having two classes in one only dilutes the racing fields. I have set up a Super Stock bike thinking that this is the way of the future and now it looks like I was wrong. Even with 6 entries at Ruapuna, it is going to be a bit lame when there are only 3-4 riders doing all the rounds.

The entry form is clear that entries must be in today. If the sec sees it today it's an entry, if she doesn't it isn't. Simple. Since when is phoning up a commissioner become an entry!
The entry form also says 10, not 6. So get to that PO box4184 Chch today!

Dan, you,re right, NZ doesn't need three 600 classes. It needs one, and it should use the template of Pro Twin. Exhaust, fuelling, suspension and race prep (handlebars/footrests/fairing) Simple, fair economic. I know of several riders who've switched because of the crazy cost/greif associated with trying to make the modified OEM rear shock work. Not to mention how dangerous it is when it doesn't work.

Nobdody has ever suggested that phonnig a commissioner constituted an entry,We were just trying to gauge interest,Rule 4-12-8 states 6 entries by closing,Rule 22-8-2 states 10,Owing to the fact the supp regs were posted on the MCI website before they were signed off by the commission chairman,I would check with the sec,But I'm confident that was supposed to be reduced to 6.

Also regarding the 600 class,The biggest class for these bikes in NZ is Formula 2,So why not run with those rules,Whoops, cause there arent any hahaha!Food for thought?

I just called the organiser to see how many PT's had entered so far - she couldn't tell me straight off but said the minimum was 6 entries, not 10.

The cold hard reality is there are not enough suspension tuners to go around, or at least enough with a solid work ethic. Also so many people that expect the work to be free or at a very very complimentary rate in spite of unavoidable overheads.
Im not saying Im for one or the other but a decision was made about the Superstock class structure and yes its not an instant land of milk and honey. Those that thought otherwise might have been a little naive. Certainly in evidence is a little inconsistency of thought where some of those that have posted in this thread have decried class costs in other threads. Its difficult to please everybody it seems

Ah not to worry Komerade, Herr John Banks will sort us all out in Charter schools and the like.
Oh, sorry no, that should be, he will allow all his rich cronies to set up schools that cater to their tastes and teach the evils of being underprivileged, while getting govt subsidies, and allow everyone else to suck eggs.
Sounds like setting up a race class for the haves so that the have-nots cannot compete.
Now where was that book that said sport is actually fundamentally elitist rather than socialist........???????

Double double, boil and bubble.......etc etc

To clear the Air " The Superstock Class" was set up because of the so called perceived costs spirally out of control and in the begining I could see some merit in it. The class was run combined last year to see which way the riders would go , it is obvious that the Supersport rules as they are now are ok , and the so called cheaper option isn't favoured. Market forces dictate I guess.

FYI: When I was a commission member last year there was much debate about the suspension issue. Peter Ramage and Myself where the only two to oppose the standard shock option , the other three members of the commission wanted the stock option. Stock shock (Yeah right).

Interestly two of those now ex-commissioners are running riders in Supersport this year , go fiqure.

    See you at Hampton Downs
