"A 30-year-old Blenheim man took matters into his own hands with a wooden garden stake when he was woken by the sound of his mailbox being damaged early one morning, police say.
Aaron Denis Paul Gotty was sentenced to 200 hours' community work when he appeared in the Blenheim District Court yesterday and admitted assault using a blunt instrument and assault with intent to injure.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Graeme Eden said Gotty was woken by the sound of his mail box being damaged about 2am on November 23. He picked up a 1.4-metre-long garden stake and confronted a small group of people outside his house.
Gotty approached and asked the victim if they had damaged his mailbox. However, before the victim had a chance to reply, Gotty drove the stake into the victim's stomach, Mr Eden said.
Gotty then approached another member of the group and struck him in the chin and hand with the stake, fracturing a bone in the victim's hand. He yelled at the victims, accusing them of damaging his mailbox, before walking back into his house.
He told police he admitted approaching the group, but denied hitting them with a stake, Mr Eden said.
Gotty's lawyer, Kent Arnott, said the man had simply had enough of his mailbox being damaged.
"This was the third time his mailbox had been damaged and when Mr Gotty approached the group, things got out of hand."
It was also Gotty's first conviction for violence.
Judge Tony Zohrab told Gotty his behaviour was unacceptable and there was no excuse for it.
"I understand how this may have happened, but you could have seriously hurt somebody."

Can't even legally defend your own property any more. How sad. Note how they refer to the offender (the vandal) as the "victim"?
