I've always thought the ban on using cell phones while driving is ridiculous. They should also have banned eating while driving, having kids in the car with you while you drive, extracting anything from a glovebox or handbag while driving, blah blah blah.

The reality is that people have always driven with one hand on the wheel from time to time, hell, even steering with their knees while getting their hot pie further out of the wrapping to eat etc. Singing along with the radio is right up there with split distraction!! Phones are simply an extension of distractions which have plagued driver inattention since forever.

The whole cellphone drama is actually quite simple. Hands free or hand held doesn't matter, it's the thought process that creates the distraction. Stuff that happens inside the vehicle is not as big a problem as you might think.
Can an experienced driver handle yapping on a cell and drive at the same time? Sure, but I can guarantee you that you can spot 99% of them weaving in their lane and slowing down.....
