I would suggest that distraction played a very prominent part in this crash.

There was very little else to explain the outcome.

Yes. But what with all the deadly hazards the group was thrashing its way through, it's no wonder people came croppers. Lordy. Mother Nature can be deadly when combined with inadequate roading infrastructure. It's not really good enough that the government isn't doing anything about this. Personally, I blame the giggling group of elves and garden gnomes that materialised beside the road and poked sticks through the front wheels of three passing bikes before disappearing.
