Different Strokes
When a 44-year-old Maori woman turned up to Middlemore Hospital with a paralysed left arm doctors diagnosed a mild stroke, but were baffled by the cause. That is, until they found a hickey on the right side of her neck, near a major artery. One of the treating doctors, Teddy Whu, explained that "because it was a love bite, there would be a lot of suction".
All that sucking caused a clot in the artery, which moved to the heart, causing the stroke. The case was reported in the New Zealand Medical Journal in January and picked up by newspapers from Australia to Britain to India.
