My faith in the universe has been restored.

I'm surprised that no one has ventured to post regarding the DESPICABLE ARSEHOLE who wants to be released from gaol on compassionate grounds, just because he's got terminal cancer and can't help shitting himself.
He and his brother beat a gas station attendant with an iron bar so they could get some lousy cigarettes, and his worthless family, who didn't seem to be concerned by his criminal activities, say that he is a good boy,and just made a bad decision.
His victim seems to be so badly brain damaged that he has forgiven him for the beating.Obviously the vengence center in his brain was damaged.
Perhaps the crim prayed to his god for the other inmates to stop buggering him.The Deity perhaps saw an opportunity to play a cosmic joke on one so deserving, and gave him a cancer that would cause him to lose control of his bowels.

no decent person makes a bad decision like that.
Let him serve his time, if he dies in prison so be it.
You make your own destiny, that was his.

I'd rather watch the tar & feather, actually....

    On serious note:
In judicial point of view, I do not think they should release him. This would cause a precedent that could open a loophole where people can get a reason for their sentence to be cut short.

    On humanity:
I believe in second chances and genuine remorse if it is present.

    P.S.

    This is a hard one...

I've had a very close family member die from cancer recently, and am preparing to watch another very close family member go a similar way... from his families point of view I can see and understand why they would want him out of jail...

I believe in do the crime do the time... but also you must consider... cancer treatments don't come cheap, nor do the nurses and doctors and guards who will have to escort him to chemo and raditation and specialist appointments...

Thats OUR tax money going to support some criminal... let him out of prison and let his family carry that burden, that way your not loosing it out of taxes and his family gets to spend what time they need with him...
I'm not a complete idiot... some pieces are missing

One way or the other WE will be paying. Treat him? Sure. Just 'delay' it a while.
Oh and bring back the Stocks too.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

I say let him rot there. He made the choice to be a dick and rob some gas station. No one forced him to. It's just bad luck he got cancer too. He did the crime, and knew it was wrong when he was doing it. So make him bloody serve the time he's been given. If he wasn't a fukin stupid twat to start with, he wouldn't be in prison, and him and his family must know that. They don't just toss anyone into prison. If he's going to do it again or not in his last days, makes no bloody point. He did it to start with, and he knew it was wrong and he knew he'd most likely be punished for it.

Here's my modest proposal - underwhich said offender would die in prison even if he didn't have a terminal disease.

Non-violent thieves - shoplifters, burglars, embezzlers and other species of sneak thief - no jail. Do work-gang stuff to pay back what you stole to those from whom you stole it - with interest. Bummer if you embezzled 2.6million, but you'd die fit.

Rapists, murderers, aggravated robbers, kid fuckers, repeat violent offenders, drunk drivers who cause permanent maiming or death - life imprisonment. Not get-out-to-offend-again-in-7-years "life" imprisonment, but you-will-be-cremated-in-the-courtyard-after-you-die life imprisonment. You leave prison in a small cardboard box (unless you make enough numberplates and sacks to pay back those you harmed and afford a proper urn for yourself).

I would also reintroduce "Weregild" - the price of a person's life or potential life - those who are imprisoned for life for maiming or killing will pay to the family/community of the victim that which the victim would reasonably be expected to have contributed had they not been maimed or killed. Workshops will be set up in prisons to facilitate this repayment.

Children will automatically be assumed to be potential Corporate Directors for the purposes of calculating their weregild.

Costing: Life imprisonment is costly but getting all the thieves out of prison and putting them to work will relieve some of the costs of the prison system. The inmates being made to work will drefray costs as the prisons will sell what they produce. Meals will not be as lavish but still will be nutricious and adequate to sustain life, no TVs, videos, cigarettes, chocolates or other conveniences - they are to be removed from society and they have lost their right to society's pleasures.

They are to remain out of society and work hard to pay back what they took - nothing more. Only the fact that they owe their victims and/or their victims famillies/communities gives them right to food, water, oxygen and more space on this planet than a 150x150x150mm cardboard box...

A non-violent revolution with no aggravated threats, maiming, killing or blood-loss - I don't believe that even the Exteme Dictator should be exempt from the law...

Drink driving without causing injury - loss of licence for a year per 100mg/l over the limit (or part thereof) and loss of vehicle. Drunk driving whilst still disqualified for previous drunk driving is a sign of recidivistic behaviour and is a second attempt at "indiscriminate murder" (as opposed to targeted murder) - no different to running around firing a weapon into a crowd - life imprisonment with work-detail (subsidise running cost of prison)

Seriously, I think NZ is too lax on crime against people and the community. Someone steals your gear, how does it benefit you that they go to jail? You still have to replace your gear. They should repay you personally. If the government wants its cut to cover running costs/make a profit, fine - build it into the consequence.

Prisons do not deter. At the moment they are to "punish" (any child psychologist can tell you punishment is not effective). Prisons should be to remove dangers to society from society. If a person is deemed enough of a danger to be removed from society, they should never be returned to society. An eighty year-old can still molest young children or wield a gun.

If a person is not a danger to society, they have no cause to be in prison, but their crimes should have natural consequences - you took it, you pay it back.

    I Like it.

I still say a .357 magnum administered to offenders frontal lobe is far cheaper and much more satisfying.

I think his karmic punishment is enough. Why should wardens have to clean him up until he dies?
Let his loving whanau do it. You know, the ones that didn't give a shit about him when he was thieving. We'll still be paying for him, but it's bound to be cheaper at home.
    Speed doesn't kill people.
