Stator/rotor are up on the back left of the motor behind the cylinder block and are dry

early ones had the alternator behind the engine, some of the later ones had them on the left side. Have a look at yamaha-motor.com, it has full parts listings and if it has a price its still available new, i'll dig out a link when i've got a minute. I had one for a few years, great bike that rides really nice and comfy to ride all day. I'll see if i can find the parts book i had,and a pdf workshop manual if you get it. Check up how much revinning costs, at 250 to buy it plus that and parts could cost more than buying a good going one, Check the state of the mufflers too, they rot out inside the stainless sleeves

I did note that one of the end plates of the muffler had been welded up.

I like the idea of a rebuild like this. I would pull it right down and start from scratch changing things to how I will like it. But will get it running first to ensure the motor is ok. Im sure I can rig up a pulse gen. Yes this one has the stator on the LH side.

On a side note if I got it I would want a motor protection bar set up. It looks exposed to me.

Cheers on the offer for the manual, will let you know how I go as ive made an offer.

Its red and silver now but see it in yellow with the Yam checkers down the side like the old race bikes. And some small storage built into the front fairing, and a power take off point, and hard panniers, etc etc

On the end of the crank?
I haven't ever seen one like that, what is the frame number?

Found my way to the parts catalog, you'll need to look up an FJ600 84-85 as it's american http://www.yamaha-motor.com/partview....aspx?ls=sport

Worth a chat with your local yamaha dealer, they still supply parts for old bikes, and the prices for the stuff I've bought was cheaper than aftermarket bits.

That finned cover you can see behind the cylinder is where the stator normally lives, ignition pick up should be behind that left hand cover

Don't do it buddy, it's a huge waste of money. Fucked motor not in system other things wrong too.. realistically even if it was all fixed up it wouldn't be worth much more than a grand. Revin alone is around 800. Buy something else. My fizzer's still for sale on a side note

It's not for sale on trademe at the moment by any chance?

If it is from a quick carjam it looks like it's been around the clock and 20k's is actually 120k's, I wouldn't be putting much money into a 20+ year old 600 with that sort of mileage on it.

Sadly this is probably true, mine was as mint as you're likely to get for it's age and with new mufflers and tyres on it I got less than 2 grand when I sold it.

Im not going to now. Hes not accepted my offer. And im not going to offer higher. To much to do on it.

I would love your FZR but outside my current budget due to ex wife and old business debts. Whats the position on it like? They dont look as extreme as modern sports bikes. Its a sexy bike.

Lookin at another XJ600. 89 this time. Has a small rattle on cold start and needs an inlet manifold is its cracked. Guessing rattle is timing chain, is it hard to do on them?
