Thread: 80s XJ600 parts, hard to get?

    Could be timing chain, also could be alternator/starter chain, I'm not sure if the later 600's had the same problem as the earlier engines with a rattle from the oil pump drive gear.

    If it goes a way with a few revs then none of these are life threatening, timing chain adjustment is easy to do unless the chain is stuffed.

    Got to have a look at one ofthese and the stator is indeed on the end of the crank, up behind the finned cover where it would normally be is an empty space with a tapered shaft where you could fit one

    End of the crank must be different than the XJ550 to take one

    My guess is it needs tappets etc done and chain adj. Are the chains a mission to do?

    Bikes done 100K but is in great cond. Same owner from 20k. Only selling cause his missus got him a Ducati for his 50th.

    Wonder if she has a younger sister.

    Mine had done 85k and still going great when I sold it, had a bit of a rattle in the engine that went away when warmed up which I never worried about too much. According to the parts book I have the camchain has a joining link, so in my past experience you can just mark the cams at tdc then use the old chain to draw a new one through the crankcase and join it up.

    Previous owner is the 4th person I know of (including myself) who has moved from an xj600 to a ducati, so beware if you buy it there may be an italian in you future...

    What a frikin great idea for the chain.

    So what did your one go like? Sounds like they have some power. Its got the stock exhaust but comes with a 4 into 1.

    Its also got 3" bar risers which would come off.

    My bike went great, if it wasn't for rego costs and needing the money for the next bike I would have kept it. Excellent step up from a 250 with enough power to keep me happy 95% of the time, reasonable brakes and very forgiving and predictable handling. Really only upgraded because I started doing longer distances, and was having to work it too hard to keep up with people on 1000cc+ bikes when I was 2 up and loaded with gear.

    Don't know why you'd want 3" risers, the standard riding position is upright enough to be nice around town, and I could happily ride it all day and still walk when I got off.
