Do people in England speak English?

cuz in the united states we speak american. how much different is american from english if the people in great england speak it? if great england is made up of norway, france, ireland, scotland, and britain, how come french speak france language and us americans speak american? im confused cuz i really want to read harry potter but it was written by a person from england and i dont speak english, i speak american. help!!
