    Idiots overtaking

Had a ride with the wife pillion from Palmy to Bulls and got slowed at Awahuri by a stream of about 6 cages held up behind a tow job...car wityh trailer os similar...doing about 80k. Held behind the tail of the last cage and waited for a spot to pour it on and pass the lot before getting to the Mount Stewart hill. Saw a group of bikes coming up fast in my mirror - within a second one was half-wheeling me on the left (not happy at this point)...and i saw a cop coming the other way. Guess they would have steamed past me otherwise. As soon as the cop was gone I pulled out and passed half the cars and pulled back into a gap for an oncoming. Pulled out again - checked the mirror and the bikes had stayed right back. Got to the slow tow job just at the intersection on the foot of Mount Stewart and the start of the passing lane...so pulled out to pass him...and right there on MY RIGHT was this tosser with his other 2 bikes passing ME as I was passing the vehicle in front. I felt the missus clench up in fear and must admit my own sphincter tightened as well. I was doinmg 80mph (Brit speedo) and they streamed past up the hill doing maybe 100mph. Pulled to the right and turned off onto a side road before the memorial at the top.
I had hoped they were to stop at Sanson, Bulls or somewhere as it was my plan to give the lead rider a solid smack in the side of the head for putting both our lives on the line for the sake of him flexing his tiny penis.
If u know who you are - don't overtake an overtaker. When u are behind - you can see and know you can do it...but you forget - whoever is in front may shit their pants and veer left or right in panic and kill themselves. Aresholes can be on bikes too. Damn.

I hear what you are saying, but did you check behind before pulling out to pass the last time?

You need to make sure you check your right before you move right to overtake. Don't just assume that because they stayed back 20 seconds ago that they couldn't be next to you or behind you at the time you decide to pull out. I've had it happen a few times where I've started overtaking two cars and the second car has decided to overtake the car in front without checking where I was and nearly running me off the road. Also, I'm not sure if you're condemning their speed but I'd be hesitant in condemn those going at 100mph when you yourself were speeding.
Sorry to not sound sympathetic but it sounds like everyone needed to exercise more care in this instance.

It's Ok !!! I'm sure they knew you were going to pull out on them and were prepared for the panic flinch of your bike when your Mrs and your sphinkter puckered in unison !

Did you head check before overtaking?

Were you indicating for 3 seconds before you started overtaking?

If you saw tossers up your ass why didn't you pull to the side after the cop had gone and let them go be douche bags away from you so you don't have to deal with being in their vicinity?

Groups of bikes are a bit of a problem full stop.
Wife and I were driving back from Blenhiem yesterday and a group of Harley riders came charging up the road.

Doesn't really bother me so I pulled to the left to leave plenty of room should they wish to squeeze past without crossing the center line.

Most piled through and pulled into the line of traffic to wait for better vision

The TOC was the best rider of the group IMO and was gracious enough to give a little wave to recognise the effort.

Anyway, the bunch of (average) car drivers got into a total head spin and watching their behaviour was a bit frightening. To be fair, most car drvers don't really know how to behave around bikes. They behave differently, esp a cluster of them. With that uncertainty drivers target fixate and get tense which exerbates the problem.

To be honest tho, I'm of the opinion that if someone catchs up to you - let them go. THEN get on with your deal.

I understand your frustration but in life you should focus on the things YOU can control i.e. yourself. What could YOU have done different?

PS - On a different subject but needing to get if off my chest. Dear Campervan driver, GET OUT OF THE FUCKING WAY.

    There I feel better now

All very feasible - but a touch unsympthathetic sniff, sniff. I did paraphrase too much..here's a better description.
...it was like this...I overtake 2 cars and pull in for a sec or 2...pull out again - yes, indicators on.. i stay on the middle line overtaking WITH MY INDICATOR ON AS IT HAD BEEN FOR THE MAYBE 5 secs of the manouver...and get to a solid yellow and pull in behind the slow tow and sit on his right with my indicator still on, the pass lane hadn't started,,just the cross hatches and I pass on them,...likely 1-2 secs into the pass, now in the actual overtake lane and the slip dick pulls past. When any vehicle is doing overtaking ahead of you..you just have to give them a chance to get it done or get out "of my way"...these guys were just showoffs who dice with their own lives on each ride..and yesterday took a chance with ours too. Likely these boys were on my tail in a blind spot waiting for clear road on my right. Sorry boys - but the WHOLE road lane belongs to the vehcile occupying it...be it car, bus or bike. If u need to overtake - you have to find another lane..or you are overtaking outside the law and outside common sense.

I think you're being a little presumptuous to think other road users are gonna give you a whole lane even when your entitled to it, be it a car bike bus or truck ! I'm also thinking, You knew they'd come, They gave you the grace of waiting till you'd done a couple of passes ! I'm picking they started passing at the same time as you perhaps a little earlier and you just never saw it coming !

All good though, ya didn't flinch and take one of them out !!!

    So no head-check?

I mean granted they were in the wrong... but blind-spot checks whenever changing lanes is a must isn't it?

This probably isn't the right place to complain about those things.

Have you considered doing some trackdays and learning to ride? I'm not sure that it'd help your terrible situational awareness, but it might improve your mediocre machine control skills.

    No it doesn't.
Have a refresher read of the road code.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

Oooo that's very true I completely forgot. You may overtake on the right of a moving vehicle within their lane. That's the reason lane-splitting is kind of legal correct?

Imagine though, no passing tractors, bicycles etc. Because you'll be sharing the lane with them
