Moto3 Regulations Released by stafftastic Thursday, October 06, 2011

The death of the two-stroke hit home even more Thursday, Oct. 6, when the FIM issued technical regulations for the new Moto3 class that's replacing the 125cc category in the World Championship starting in 2012.

Some of the key highlights:

Engine:

250cc, four-stroke only. Single cylinder only. No turbocharging or supercharging. Crankshaft limited to 14,000 rpm. No pneumatic or hydraulic valve systems. No variable valve timing or valve lift systems permitted. The maximum price of the engine is 12,000 Euros, including the throttle body, injectors and a complete transmission. Any team competing in the race can buy the engine used in that race by another team for 12,000 Euros. (The "claimer" rule) Each engine manufacturer must supply sufficient engines and spare parts for 15 riders per season, if requested. The minimum will be eight riders for manufacturers entering the championship for the first time. A maximum of eight engines can be used per rider for the entire season. A rebuilt engine is counted as new.

Inlet, Fuel System and Lubricant:

The throttle must be controlled exclusively by mechanical means (i.e., cable) that is operated by the rider only. Maximum of two fuel injectors and two independent fuel injector drivers.

Transmission:

Maximum of six gearbox speeds, with a maximum of two possible gear ratios for each gearbox speed and two possible rations for the primary driver gear. Teams must declare the two ratios chosen for each gear at the start of the season, with only those ratios used all season. Seamless-shift transmissions prohibited.

Ignition, Electronics and Data Logging

Only ECU's approved by the series organizer are allowed, and they cannot be modified. The official ECU will include an engine rpm limiter and an inboard data logger. No other data-logging devices can be used.

Chassis

Minimum total weight of the motorcycle and rider is 148 kg (326.3 pounds). Brake discs must be made from ferrous materials (steel).

Materials and Construction

Camshafts, crankshafts and piston pins must be made from ferrous materials (iron, steel). Engine crankcases, cylinder blocks and cylinder heads must be made from cast aluminum alloy. Pistons must be made from an aluminum alloy. Connecting rods, valves and valve springs must be made from ferrous- or titanium-based alloys.

for the tech savvy, as an estimation, what kind of power do you reckon they will get out of engines with these specs?
sounhds very limited and boring/slow as fuck???

Have just been up close and personal with the Honda moto3 bike, think rs 125 with CR donk
but there are some very nice touches, the exhaust is cute, its very slim, , quite solid up the front
I will try and take some photos, but HRC, are a bit anal about photo taking, I'm there until Friday so will try ...
good move by Honda..., a cheap maybe competive 250,
yeah I look forward to this season

was it a tiwn cam head? the CR's are single cam and i thought i had heard the new motor was twin cam?

sorry for the late reply, yes is twin can, nothing special about the thing really, but good usable tune able, and cheap,,, the wear rates are low enough this will be an awesome club bike
I have photos but they are on the phone and I haven't had the chance to upload them
