    Starts only via pushstart?

So I made a thread on how my bike had cut out yesterday, in the middle of town, and now I think that its time to find out what the hell is wrong with the thing.

Okay. When I use the battery charger, and fully charge the battery, the electric start works just fine. Starts right off the bat. As the charge drops, it takes a few more cranks, and someimes the choke, but it starts.

Yesterday, it started after a few cranks. (Prior to that, it had been sitting for about a week), So I rode it round town to charge the battery, and I got to an intersection, it bogged down, (I could hear it wanting to cut out) So I gave it a small twist of the throttle, but it just cut out. The electric start wouldn't work, It sounded like it was jamming, because it just went clickclickclick, but the light was running fine. Talked to a friend on the phone who said that it was an electrical problem if the headlight was running fine. We got someone to come and help us pushstart the thing and it started right up. Rode it home, let it idle for a bit, then turned it off. And it wouldn't start again. Charged it with the battery charger, and it started without having to hold the starter down for long.

Mind you this is the second time that this has happened, Just the first time was a little closer to home.....

Another thing is that if you push start it, it runs fine, just doesn't want to start with the electric starter

    Halp?

I think that Ducatilover has good knowledge on this stuff.

How olds your battery? At a guess it's not holding enough charge to crank it over. To my way of thinking would need much less power for the lights to work.

The battery is around 6 months old, only travelled around 3000 ks with it in the bike. Alternator looks fine gives around 13.8-14 volts across the system when its going.

The AGE of the battery is only part of the equation ... how it's been used/treated features strongly in it's useable life span. Being able to be started on a full charge ... but not if sitting. "suggests" battery problem.

Check for a battery drain ... after checking the wireing to the battery is in good condition. If somesome of the strands in the wires are broken (but still complete a circuit) it may not give a full charge.

The starter motor may be another thing to check (worn brushes ???)
