Being smart can help a person to strategise and build weapons, just like when the European settlers came to NZ or when the Americans invaded Africa to thieve some slaves. In both those cases the white people were physically weaker than the "natives", but the extra intelligence of the whites is what paid off.

I watched a fascinating doco on SBS the other night in which Rageh Omar examined the question of whether I.Q had anything to do with race....commonly held beliefs that for example that Blacks or Africans were genetically dumber than whites...
Well it turns out that actually it has nothing to do with race,it has everything to do with education.The most important factor is having a middle class upbringing & access to education & if given the opportunity we are all capable of brillance, it just requires stability, good parenting & schooling. At this point its actually the East Asians who have the highest average I.Q of 106 & the experts including our own Professor Flynn put this down to a culture that has focused on education for the last 3000 years.

Who would have thunk it would have had anything to do with education and the time and effort put into those who are being taught eh . No, budget didnt really come into it in the doco it was more to do with stabilty & a culture of encouraging it.
Something interesting that came out of it was when Stanford university changed its acceptance criteria to the SAT system which is based purely on results of entrance exams, that thier campus suddenly jumped to 40% Asian.
Also it pointed out that the high School with the highest graduation rate in NY State was a school in the Bronx with 96% graduating & which has a Headmaster who uses a new approach of small classes & top notch dedicated teachers.
Alot was made also of good parenting....

There's an inherent contradiction there, in that it's probably only since the end of slavery, that the African races which contribute their genes to the US, have not been selected on the basis of physical prowess over anything else. I saw a doco somewhere about a village in high-altitude Kenya somewhere that traditionally favoured the ability to run a long way and steal cattle as the ultimate mark of a man - unsurprisingly the number of world-class distance runners from the region was pretty high.

True MrD,there is that correlation, but this was the thing, the crux of the matter with the doco was that there is NO genetic link to intelligence, that as a species the only thing which is proven to raise IQ is eduction. It is actually the blacks which have shown the greatest increase in IQ from an average of just over 80 back in the sixties to an average of 100 now, whereas us whiteys have only increased 6 IQ points in the same period.....

Isn't that like saying that there's no genetic link to strength and speed and that the only thing proven to raise your strength is lifting weights in the gym?
