I do know what your mean about too many hands on the job. Was best for me to stay back.

How are you after all this?
You would have been right there too, wouldnt you?
Yea, you did the right thing.

Me? Tired and full of Speights. But I can't sleep... just keep running the whole scenario thru my mind and keep seeing those images. Yep, you could say I was right there. I was the twat with the red flag in the middle of the straight trying to get everyone to stop. When the shit started hitting the fan I had to make a decision for my own safety... do I go left towards the pit wall or right towards the infield wall. It was a bloody good split decision move to my right 'cause all the bikes and riders came flying down the pit wall side of the track. Pure luck on my part, but that's no help to the family and friends of those lost and injured.

Hey Mitch, Martin and all who were there. I wasnt there, but Marknz - I have been in a situation as a marshall trying to clear up an incident and having a mob of bikes in full racing mode come running down on you at full racing speed - fucking scary!
Theres nothing any of you can do now, except to process what you've been through, and help those who didnt come out unscathed.
Just know that we are all behind you and thinking of you.
Take it easy on yourselves and do what you feel you need to do, to process all this stuff.

Fuck! Lost for words, put a major damper on my night when i found out, must have been horrible to be there, worst i have seen was a vic day years ago when a guy on a BMW lowsided, everyone had slowed but a 250 stroker rider came around full tit saw all of us stopped biffed his bike away which took out a marshall running to the scene, nasty stuff, my thoughts are with those involved, may all injured make a speedy recovery and the one that wasn't so lucky RIP.

The more Hamish and I talk about what happened the more horrified we get - it was a terrible situation and hindsight is always wonderful.

With any high-speed sport there's always the chance of something going terribly wrong, which it did yesterday.

The hairpin marshalls definitely had a red flag, but by the time they would have been told to put it out, the riders had already been through the hairpin and were on their way through the esses towards the front straight. Remember the circuit was being run in reverse. (I'm not making any speculations, I am stating a fact here.)

Who of us could have conceived such a set of circumstances happening as what happened yesterday?

    Not me, that's for sure.

Slightly earlier in the day, the Post Classic race (race 2?) was redflagged because of a fall in the esses, and the system worked okay. (That rider was okay.)

Thankyou Lynda for clearing that up.
It' makes me think more better (don't know how it express it) of a bad situation.

We appreciate your efforts Mark to help run the meet.
Really sorry you have to go through all this.
Don't know what else to say at this time.

PS. As long as there was a red flag ready to be put out at the hairpin/start of the front straight, Then this was a "Racing Incident". (as opposed to...) A "Racing Incident" that shall be learned from, and changes made so to doesn't happen again.

Yea. Look, I honestly don't know what the situation was with red flags anywhere else on the circuit. I don't actually know how many other red flags were out there, so cannot comment on that.

Don't know what to say really. Still feeling gutted. All our thoughts go out to Owen's family. General all round top bloke.

I was one of the lucky ones who was stopped and didn't get hit by anyone.

All the marshalls did there jobs, just everyone was feeling a bit helpless due ti the scale of the accident. Emergency services were there really quickly.

And before anyone else goes on about how it should have been prevented, rest assured that the Police and MNZ will be looking very closely into what happened, and if anything needs to change, then it will.

Still can't really express what I feel in such a public forum, but these things hit you hard when it happens to you. We can't wind back the clock and change what's happened. Lets just try and make sure it doesn't happen again.

I'd also like to say I have a new found discust of the media. Fucking bastards wouldn't leave us alone.

Mate I went to East Timor when all the shit was going down in '99 and I know what you mean about the media. Some were OK but a few disgusted me. I was ashamed to say that they were from NZ.

Heard this on the news yesterday - came on here looking for details but as WT posted on epage 1 (or 2) of this thread... no names wanted or expected till families know.

Thoughts are with those injured, involved, and affected by the accident. Big thanks to all who helped

My sympathies go to the friends and families of the racer who died & also to those involved in the incident. I can't even begin to realise how horrific it would be to be a part of that.
My goal in life is to be as good a person as my dog already thinks I am.

    Horrible what happened......

How do marshalls communicate with one another?? Are they all linked by radio equipment or do they rely on visual signals or??
