The prank caller is a very bad man and yes, it was a crime. Probably about as heinous, in terms of actual impact on society, as crayoning rude words on the fence of someone you don't like, or doing an after-hours burnout in an industrial area.

I'm guessing you are trolling but just in case you genuinely believe the above, you are wrong.

A telephone call is a personal intrusion into another person's life. Usually a welcome and acceptable intrusion but the essence is, the contact is personal. That elevates obscene phone calls far above distant graffiti artists etc. Furthermore a call at 1:00am usually gets the heart pounding because it can mean bad news.

A person alone is vulnerable and this sort of nasty stuff can leave the victim imagining they are being watched, followed, at risk.

I understand and share the OPs anger and frustration when he is far from home and powerless to be there and protect his family, especially having experienced breakins in the past.

Surely blowing this completely out of proportion will make the op's misses even worse.
I would have thought playing it down as just a stupid prank would be the better option.
If she is already nervous then escalating security, bringing in the cops etc will certainly not make her feel at ease.

In the course of a former employment I had occasion to discuss security with many people.

Guys who work away from home for extended periods: seagoing crew, oil rig workers, etc, do worry about the safety of the wife and kids while they are away. It isn't at all uncommon for them to take some additional precautions: alarms of various sorts, new locks, fences, a big dog, whatever.

Some of these guys are seriously hard characters, but I don't think the wife getting an obscene call in the wee small hours would be taken at all lightly by most.
