    Gas in the tank is good insurance ... at any time.

    BUT ... never trust the gauge. Setting the tripmeter to zero when you fill ... at the next fill check km's done and amount of fuel used. Doing this for about a half dozen times ... will give you an "average" fuel use. A lot of top gear use with gentle throttle use will get better fuel consumption.

    basically fill up at home, fill up at Whitianga.

    Unless you can't get 220km out of a tank.

    Here ya go. Motowhere route planner map...






    Says 434 odd km total. Cut a couple of K's off for dumb stuff that motowhere does - like send you via off ramps and on ramps... Two tanks of gas oughta do it. Maybe refuel at Whitianga?
