    Petrol discounts

    Funny thing...

Lilfox and I go up to d'Auckland every Sunday. We leave the m'way onto East Tamaki Road.

Along this road there are a bunch of servos. All advertising their 91 octane gas at around $199.9c/l - $2.04.9c/l.

My question: How can these gas stations afford to sell gas 18c/l cheaper than I see it anywhere else? If they can afford it, why can't everyone?

Unless this is the only way to get Otara residents to pay for any of it of course...

Oteha Mobil is under $2 per litre...Awakino was $2.24 per litre! thankfully I wasn't filling a car!
One of the dearest servos is at Marsden point, yet at Oakleigh, its again, under $2 per litre...21 kms seperate the two.

The Mobil here in town just copy's what ever the Gull at Snells beach is selling at..
If Gull lower their price, so does the Mobil...sucks but thats how it is.

In Rotorua, the price differs horrendously from end of town to the other.
I guess the ones that sell at the lower rate rely on a greater vehicle turnover?

The Mrs works are cerebos-greggs in ETM rd.. the servo there is ALWAYS the cheapest by 10-20c.
Get her to fill up the people mover there...

Ironically, 1km up the road its 2.24 (instead of 1.99)

    It is nuts..

i refuse to give money to BP, and TBH, in my shitboxes, there's no diffrence between it and 95-96. gull ethanol is about the next closest, purported to be 98... IRL better than 95... but it's all the way in town.

    -edit-
    so no, i don't have 98 nearby.

Anything higher than 91 is a waste unless your running real high compression.

Yada yada yada. While you are correct, 91 in NZ (from what I've heard from those in the industry) is crap. My NZ new bike pinks on 91 (which it's rated for) and gets less mileage than 95. Same with my cars with regards to consumption.

    Is 12.8:1 high enough?

To answer the original question ... the gas stations do make a profit on fuels. And the degree of profit they choose to make is up to them.

Often this "discounted fuel" is sold in the hope more fuel is sold in the same space of time. Thus monthly profit remains the same. More punters through the doors usually means more NON fuel related products sold (with a higher mark-up than a corner dairy). Usually a gas station would make more profit from a bag of lollies ... than a tank full of petrol sold.

And ... for some reason ... some punters would travel across the city to save 18 cents a litre. (and only put $20 in )
