See I think Govts are the problem, we need oil like it or hate it for a while yet we're gonna be dependent on it. So the Govts need to grow some balls & stop taking backhanders and change the approval for exploration & drilling, it should come with a hefty agreement,
"should something go wrong the company has 1 week to sort it out/clear it up. If the company fails to do so the Govt steps in & throws everything at saving the environment with costs going to the oil company" None of this 'allowing them to try to save profits' like in the Gulf.
They fuck up they wear the costs & it will be sorted immediately, if that means they have to permanently seal off the oil so be it environment comes first, if the cost of the clean-up sends them bankrupt so be it the environment comes first.

Well thats my opinion anyways. Hassling the oil companies won't do anything, they should be hassling the Govt to put hefty conditions on the agreements

I'd rather we prepared for it is all, after all there are people to come after us... who knows what the'll achieve given a decent start. As you say the day will come and it'll be bloody or it'll be expected and "mitigated" for.

Yeah, nah, yeah, nah, yeah, nah ... there's nothing to say that we can't do both. Ideally battery powered vehicles or a decent transport system for commuting and as that'll take years to achieve and cost more money than NZ has made to date, there are very few options. It seems stupid to think that all of the resources are currently available, but the money isn't and neither is the political will or it would seem the personal will to give it a go.
