1995 XR250R oil leak - Help please

I have just bought an XR250R 1995 model, to follow my son around on some trail rides, but I have discovered a small oil leak.

It leaks just around the sump plug area, but despite a new washer and a really close inspection, I can't stop it or see exactly where the leak is coming from.

Is it from the plug or could there be a very small crack near the plug that is causing the leak?

Is there an easy way to determine exactly where the leak is comming from and it there an easy way to repair the leak without taking the whole engine out.

Is there anyone in the Auckland area that could repair the leak for a reasonable fee?

Any help/advise would be appreciated.

When I got my XR200 it leaked from the stator cover just above the sump plug. Pulled the stator off after draining the oil, put some sealent around it and re-fitted. No problems.

Where are you? I could pop round one evening to look?

Check to see if a Helicoil thread repair coil has been fitted into the sump thread.
If they are not fitted properly, they will constantly weep.
Also try either a Aluminium, or copper washer.You can even use a dowty, (hydraulic sealing) washer if need be. ENZED hydraulics have them.
Praythere is no crack.

I have leaned the bike over to the right up against the wall (Sump plug is on the left) and left it for a while. There is no sign of any oil to the left and up the side of the engine (Hope this makes sense)

Thanks for the offer of help. I live in Waiuku, might be a bit far for you to travel. But if you are happy to travel, perhaps next week sometime, if i can't fix it myself, I will certainly take up the offer.

I have tried an aluminium (from Honda) and a copper washer, but still it leaks.

If it is cracked, is it repairable? I see there are a few epoxys on the market that claim to be able to repair metal/aluminium.

to find the source of the leak clean down the area with brake/parts cleaner (the stuff in the aerosol can) till there is no trace of the old oil. then coat the area that you think the leak is coming from with the wifes baby powder till it has a good coating then run the bike. The point that the leak is coming from will quickly turn black pin pointing the leak.
