New guy with a question (Junglesponge)

Hey guys ive been with the kiwibiker website for a while but never posted anything but i have a question that i would like to put to you all. I am a fan of anything with two wheels(apart from scooters its like driving a chair) and i am a bit of a DIYer and want to make my own bobber/chopper bike. I want to start from scratch but was talking to a bike store worker and he said im better off buying something already registed and cut it up to what i want. thats fine and all but i would like to make my own.i guess my question is can i make my own bike to register on NZ roads?if so what are the steps invovled? please all opinions and replys are really welcome .

by from scratch do you mean building your own frame etc? - if so, Id suggest doing your first build based on production bikes, start with an existing farme and work from there, learn as you go, and have a go at making your own frame etc later on.
If you (I am assuming here) are relatively new to bikes, it could be quite dangerous to jump straight into custom fabricating a frame. then theres the question of what skills you do and do not possess?

You can make some pretty cool stuff by starting with a complete, rough donor bike - thats my suggestion for a first project. iron the wrinkles out etc first.

If you are new to bikes why not buy an S40, single cylinder bike that you can get odds and ends for from the USA (even bobber kits - blue collar bobbers) and use that as the basis for a bobber - by the time you finish and LAMS are allowed you can ride it as well. Just a thought as a first project.

    not too new

ive done a few rebuilds before but nothing this major.im a spraypainter and my brothers a certified welder but i was planning on finding a donor frame. i wanted to clear up on laws what i can and cant do. so say i buy a gn250(for example) and it is de reged is it possible to fabricate it for NZ roads and get it regod that way or is it best to get it road legal than destroy it. if i can do it before a reg thats great but do i need to get a engineer in to cert every thing i do in the process. i just dont want to do it all and they brickwall me. cheers

fair enough - for your safety its good to know you have a certed welder on hand!.

I would start then, by making a list of what you basically want to build. once you have it all clear in your head, go down and see one of the guys at a place that does certing and revinning. Discuss exactly what you want to do, and how you intend to do it.
They will be able to tell you what is legal and what isnt, whether it will require certification, and can possibly even suggest some better ways of acheiving your goal.

Make sure you have the RIGHT information first, and have spoken to someone who KNOWS their shit before you make a start- (dont just take some random off the internet at their word)
