Science Is But An Organized System Of Ignorance"Pornography: The thing with billions of views that nobody watches" - WhiteManBehindADesk
seen it, more of the usual!
The Lambo/MP4/Noble bit is pretty good, but I wish they'd do a proper car review!
They need Chris "Monkey" Harris to do a few reviews for them, he can actually drive unlike the top gear muppets!

Um, that's the thing. None of them are particularly great drivers, nor do they pretend to be. They are three talented and lucky guys having a laugh in cars that most of us would never get to do, but would love to do. Did you see their test on the the S-Class and 7 Series? They raced them around a track. Where else would that happen? Smoking up Bentley's on the test track. Think many prospective purchasers are concerned with that?
You're watching the wrong show if you want informative reviews done by 'good' drivers. If you want 'seat of the pants' reviews and a bit of a laugh then watch TG. Watched 5th Gear? It's got Tiff on it, now he can really drive. And Vicki, another very talented driver. They do decent reviews for just another 'entertainment show'.

Another show I watch for entertainment is the Japanese' Best Motoring International. Those guys, especially Keiichi Tsuchiya, can even tell the difference in weight transfer/ suspension work upon different tyre pressure settings. What I'm trying to say is, those guys really know their stuff. Very impressive. Also they do some sick super car lap battles on Tsukuba circuit.
Here is one late example:
If you can make it on Kiwibiker you can make it anywhere.
I missed the first 17 seasons...I would imagine the 18th being very similar to the last 17 so....what else is on?
Thats the thing, Clarkson likes to pretend he is! Every time you see him sliding around the track, clever editing seems to come into it preventing the inevitable uncatchable spin!
It used to be about informative reviews, watch some of the early seasons...
Fifth gear is a bit meh, but yeah they can all drive at least with some decent wheel men/woman on the payroll.
I suppose after 17 seasons I'm just over the scripted jokes and Clarksons opinionated demeanor, people have given him the power to single handedly wreck a vehicles reputation!

I was watching TG back when it was Tiff, Jeremy and Quienten, and yes it was more informative back then. I liked it then and I like it now too. And Clarkson was ruining cars reputations back in the early shows too, surely you would remember that. Vauxhall anyone? And he was also prohibited from driving certain brands in reviews from his newspaper days, way way back.
Generally I agree with you - but it doesn't stop me from continuing to watch.
The magic of current Top Gear format became very apparent towards the end of Season Two, when the chemistry between the three presenters became obvious. Back then it was still a "magazine" type show - mainly car reviews. A nice balance across the car range, with reviews of a few basic saloons for Mr and Mrs Average, lots of hot-hatches for the boy-racers, and lots more supercars for us all to drool over. The superlative photography in the pre-HD days was enthralling.
The emergence of the "three guys cocking about" gave the show the lift above the basic magazine show, and slowly but surely the cocking about has been forced to become more outrageous and widespread, to the point that it has taken over the show entirely. Effectively the show has become a slightly self-conscious parody of itself, with the presenters (particularly the two "juniors") occasionally failing to disguise their discomfort and embarrassment.
I think that Top Gear evolved to its maximum extent at least five seasons ago, and has simply being going through the motions ever since. The proper car reviews have basically stopped, with many manufacturers being reluctant to submit their vehicles to an irrelevant ratings-based circus-stunt review - which despite the tongue-in-cheek irreverance could still destroy a car's reputation.
I will still be watching and enjoying for a little longer, but I do lament the loss of the balance ratio which gave the show its magic.
Can I believe the magic of your size... (The Shirelles)
Let's not forget that it's the biggest rating show from BBC. When I first started watching it in the late '90s it was on BBC on TV1 at 2:30 in the morning. When I talked of the show to my motoring friends no one knew what I was on about. Now everyone asks if I've seen such and such episode. As far as ratings go, they must be doing something right.
Oh and if you think Clarkson pretends to be a good driver then read some of his books, he admits openly that he's not a good driver. But what do viewers want to see? Some monkey spinning out constantly or some nicely edited shots showing what we all wish we could do. Including Jeremy.
yeah I remember that for sure. Just never been a fan of the guy. Some of the things he says can be funny, but I just think he's over the hill and out of touch with reality.
Funny thing is people actually believe and care about what he says! The general motoring press are usually the opposite!
For the average Joe, his words are gospel as they don't have or want access to actual reviews from Car mags etc. And as for the TG Test Track! What a joke that is, cars tested at various times throughout the year in dry/damp/wet conditions and assembled into some form of leaderboard that has no basis in real world testing!
Plus the guy dislikes bikes!!!!!!
Viva La Figa
I agree that the test track has no real world application, but it helps with the ratings. The show has reached a point now that they don't give advice on anything the majority of the buying public will own, so whether the new Mondeo is a great car compared to the new Honda Accord is irrelevant to TG. How much smoke you can produce from the back tyres of a 7 series is however. And that's what the punters want to see. They'll never own a new 7 series, or if they do they'll never take it to the track and destroy $2000 worth of tyres in 5 laps. It is pure entertainment, not a review. And that's what the show is now, entertainment. Heck, even when they do a 'serious' test between an Aston Martin, a 911 and a 430 they never agree on a winner, each picking their own favourite.
The TG magazine on the other hand does do real world tests, and not by Clarkson and his two cohorts. They write their own pieces on random shit, but they don't do the test between the Mondeo and Accord, which are quite informative and don't involve wheelspin or pointless drag races.
