MEAN!!!! highland cattle. They rock. My dads mate only has them on his farm. Had a bull for breeding and he made $500 a day off it just for letting the neighbours heifer lounge around looking sexy (too the bull) so that he'd root it and yeah you get the picture....

    cool calf.

    Re pic

Hey Dave Lovely pic, both my Kb girls did the whole calf club thing, also goats and lambs, its pretty cool for country kids to get in to that stuff, its good for them to grow up with a love and respect for animals, and of course as a Scot, Highland cattle are pretty special to me.

The only reason I only ride in the Iron man Class is I have no friends left to enter the two man events,
    my own fault really.

Im sorry it has to be said, "Highland cattle are pretty special to me." Dare I ask, how special and in what way? No wait we wont go into that.
Im only raising the comment before Nhuanh or Bruce does.

    (kidding)

On a side note, as a townie living in the sticks, I guess I got the whole calf day thing at the local school to look foward to. So do they roast up the winner on a spit there and then. If we had a pet cow or sheep. Ill name it "Roast"
Nice photo Dave, when will we see the photos of the prize winning fish caught ?

Do they have bring a pet day at her school?
That'll be some impressive pet to bring to school.

She's so lucky. I want to get a Highland calf as a pet but apparently our section isn't big enough. I grew up on a farm and its against the rules to eat anything with a name!

When I get my dream home, Highland cattle are on the "must get" list - along with Soay sheep and Connemara ponies - collect the set of small-but-tough celtic farm animals. No, I will not be getting Corgis to round up the cattle!

Now you know I'm not a fan of kids, but that is one cute photo! Nice to see something cute and cuddly after reading some of the other posts on this forum today...

We've got five ewes in lamb right now, looking forward to the little fluffy lambs arriving in a few months - the ram is an Oxford (looks like a cross between a teddy bear and a buffalo...) so they could be interesting!

I wish that was a rule in my family! I too grew up on a farm, as a child I loved pigs, so my dad gave me a little piglet, which I named Porky (how original) One day Porky just dissapeared, a couple of years later dad told me we ate her for Xmas that year. 25 years on and I still haven't quite gotten over it . . .

BTW Claire, where you form in Rotovegas - I spent 15 years there, now when I go back it stinks! I swear I never noticed it when I lived there . . .

We always had distinctions between "pet" lambs and those destined for food. The "don't eat anything with a name" seems to be around - an "Alternative Lifestyle" mate of our family bred white rabbits for the pot - carefully didn't name any of them. He confessed he daren't name them or he would not be able to kill and eat them.

I know LiasTZ would think I'm soppy bugger a for treating a sheep as a pet but wtf.

I have no problem eating meat from certain species of animal and I have no problems with hunting for food - I just wouldn't eat an animal we raised as a "pet" - not even a calf or lamb.
