    ZX9R induction noise?

    Hey,

Just had my bike serviced after being unused for 2 or so years.
Got a B Service done from TSS Motorcycles in Wellington. No issues at all with them, seem like a good crowd.

Had to get a new rear brake disc, they changed the plugs, the air filter (disintegrated when they cleaned it), balanced the carbs, adjusted the chain, accelerator etc etc. Whole bunch of things, and a WOF most importantly.

When I picked up the bike this afternoon and started her up, the induction noise was incredible - incredibly loud that is.
The only thing I can think of is the air filter change they did, the new one maybe being a higher flow/less restriction.

It is so loud now, I cant hear the exhaust over the induction noise.
    Something doesnt seem right.

They put in a "HIFLO airfilter ZX9R" according to the parts list. $33.91
Apparently its a foam type which you oil etc.

    Anyone experienced anything like this.
I am going to take the tank off and have a look in a few minutes, just to see if anything doesnt look right.
The guy doing the servicing said he noticed it too (bit hard not too!) but wasnt sure if it was like that to start with (it wasnt). He was adamint it all went back together correctly, so I can only attribute it to the new air filter.

    Ideas?

    Cheers

pull the tank and check that the air box halves are sealing properly, the air filter on every bike acts as a muffler for the intake noise so the new filter might be a bit louder than the old one if it is a bit more free flowing. But as loud as you are discribing i would be looking for a air box leak.

in my experience, a bike with an airbox that isnt not bolted in correctly (i.e. has leaks) will have a loud induction noise, but also it will refuse to rev out to redline. if its not running noticeably rich or lean, and it revs out freely to redline, then its most likely just the new filter.
If your old filter 'literally fell to bits' then there were probably bits of if blocking up the airflow before you took it in, restricting airflow further

Yeah took the tank off - well, swung it out of the way, and had a quick look and the halves looked in place correctly.

I will take the tank right off on the weekend and have a decent look, and take the halves apart and check they were sealed etc.

Yeah the guy said it fell apart when he went to clean it. I dont believe I have changed it in the 7 years I have owned it, but I may be wrong. I do remember cleaning and re-oiling it, but that was some time ago... or was that my old bike... hmm. Well overdue anyway.

Just put in new rear pads that I purchased and forgot to give TSS, and cleaned out the clutch switch which was intermittant and wouldnt let me start sometimes - all is good as now.

    Will ride to work tomorrow.

    Cheers

Agreed, but what I have now is rediculously loud.
Standing next to the bike when its idling, you cannot hear the exhaust over the induction noise.
Riding now I pretty much will need ear plugs - or take a concrete pill and 'get hard' - ha.
Actually sounds like your head is inside the engine, you can hear every pip and fart the engine makes.

No problem with induction noise in general, love it too, but what I have just doesnt seem right for some reason.

    Time will tell

    understandable,
go for a decent spin and see if you notice any performance difference

Havent riden it for over 2 years, so dont really have a fresh comparison sadly.
Didnt ride it before TSS came and picked it up either. Only started it up and changed the fluids etc. Was quiet(er) then.

But yes, a good ride is in order.

A ZX9R should be ridden and enjoyed as much and as often as possible! A true classic and still one of the fastest road bikes! What model is it and do you have pics you can post?

    Hey.

Yep she still goes well, just under 50,000km on the clock.

    Its a 1996 ZX9R B4

The way it rides now is like it has a lumpy cam in it, after the service etc. Interesting. Good fun to ride.

Few pics from 2005 after I got her repainted. Previous owners changed the colour a few times, was the standard Kawasaki Green and Purple, and then went to Blue, and then to Black - and then I got it repainted Black again as the job was pretty naff.
No plastic under the seat also, one of the previous owners stripped all that out and now has nicely folded aluminium plate under there. I am assuming its standard engine wise, but who knows.

If it's revving the whole way out happily with no loss in power, then it's the filter.
If the airbox is sealed up, check the ram air tubes, but you'll know if there's a leak in one of 'em, won't rev past 4k or so.

I would say it's the filter and you should change it more

Still have my ZX9 C1 (1 owner) in the shed somewhere, no induction noise at idle, growls nastily with throttle 3/4 to full open, with appropriate vibration.
That's why I never sold it. Has original foam/felt filter.

my 2 cents, I had the h1 zxr750, with a k&n filter fitted etc the induction noise was incredible even at er, well over the speedlimit where the most u hear is windnoise i could still hear the induction noise eh.

it didnt run like it had a lumpy cam tho lol..

check for air leaks all round, airbox to carbs etc.. she'll be right. I like a bit of induction, maybe ur exhaust is too quiet

You wanna ride the new model GSXR750 then. Fuck my brown goat if it's not the god damned loudest induction noise ever.
