Questions about this Fly Trekker helmet

Recently I was browsing for a new helmet and I came across this website ,http://www.revzilla.com/, and I found this helmet ,http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/f...-hi-viz-helmet, the question is; can I wear this helmet legally in New Zealand or is D.O.T restricted for use in America only?

Off topic, but a related question; Can you insure motorcycle gear?

But for all practical purposes if it looks like a moderbike helmet nobody is ever going to check it. I'd say if you can buy it and get it here it'll do the job nicely. Only thing I'd suggest you think about is that peak, they're a load on the neck muscles at highway speeds.

And yes you can insure it, it'd normally be covered under your houshold contents insurance, if you don't have that or any other insurance call around to see what's on offer.

You missed the relevant bit: "Helmets complying with FMVSS 218 will be marked with the letters 'DOT'. This standard is only acceptable for motorcycle helmets that have been manufactured and purchased in the United States."
Unless the helmet also carries a Snell approval it's technically illegal to import a DOT only helmet for on road use in NZ. Though as you point out if you can get it past customs OK it'll probably never get checked, which just makes the whole thing a farce.

Buyers should also be aware that due to the way the DOT testing is carried out a DOT only helmet will weigh considerably more than an equivalent ECE, Snell etc., approved helmet. (generally around 200gms heavier on average) Add that to your valid comment regarding the peak and it could make for a very sore neck at the end of a long ride.
I personally wouldn't wear a DOT approved helmet as I have very little faith in that standard, and personally always look for a helmet that has ECE and Snell approval.
