Drag racing - First timer

Been talked into taking my Bike down the strip next Saturday and it'll be the first for me doing the 1/4 mile.

Any advice on tyre pressures , launch methods etc would be appreciated.

I'm on a pretty much stock Gen 2 'Busa running a set of Yoshi cans .

depends how serious you want to get.
first time I went to the strip on my 600, I just went to have fun and feel it out. I road there, did 6 or 7 runs and went home - it was totally stock, didnt touch a single thing and it went great.

You can dump your pressures and strap the front and gear it down for your runs if you want to get serious - but personally I would recommend just going and not taking it too seriously your first time there. do a couple runs, and talk to those who are there for advice if you feel good and want to go a bit quicker you can make small adjustments as the day goes on

Don't see why not. I'd never done drags before either, but our meet was held on an ordinary chip-sealed road (closed, of course

). The day was hot and the tar was melting, so initial grip was better between tyre and chip than it was between chip and tar...
On my 750 (standard road trim in every way) I ran in the 12s all day, with a fastest of 12.02.

Drop the rear tyre pressure to no more than 20psi, do a burnout (very important, a lot of guys don't, but you get way more grip), it may seem basic, but sit ya nuts hard against the tank and pretty much lie on it, you need your weight as low and far forward as you can get it. Put BOTH feet down, as far forward as you can, this does the same, and two feet mean you launch straight. Other than that, just make sure you're getting full throttle (you may need to 'over-grab' the grip).
I'm not sure where you're running, but at Meremere we found way more grip at the sides of the track, off the bit where the cars run (unless the track has been comp prepped).

Some peeps also recommend softening your suspension but thats very much a case by case thing and what works for one model may not work for the next. For instance dropping the tyre pressure and softening the suspension on the 1125 just turned it into a wannabe tank slapping beast.
Back to stock and it wants to point the front wheel at the sky...in 1st 2nd AND third gear!

Launch methods also vary greatly depending on your get-up-and-go in 1st.
Heres my perspective: on my Sporty I would stage deep ( about a metre back from the start line )and I would go as soon as the light turned purple which meant I was already moving as the light turned green and I went over the start line. Never once broke out on the Sporty.

The Buell X1 is a totally different story, can't give it too much herb on take off or it will flip (being so darn light) and 1st and 2nd are a bit of a wrestle but I just keep the throttle on and never say die. I am not sure what the max limit for staging is cos in hindsight I can't help but wonder if maybe I should have tried really deep with the Buell...never mind cos her draggin days are well and truely behind her now!

Anyways,I would imagine that the Busa might have the same initial probs on takeoff... cos of all that power...oh yeah baby!

It will be a fun learning curve finding out just how far you can push it on takeoff and still keep it under control.

Just don't take it too seriously and you will really enjoy yourself!

The start is all important... expect to destroy clutch plates after a few meets

0-60ft in under 2 seconds and you're on your way to 10 second runs
