Radiator repair

Hey guys,

So i had the unfortunate luck of going through some particularly nasty roadworks heading to Rotorua a couple of days ago (2 minute old Tar with freshly layed stones) that scratched and cracked my fairings, destroyed my oil filter, dented the shit out of my exhaust and ultimately ended up puncturing my Radiator for my ZX6R in two places. Can anyone recommend any Radiator repair shops in Auckland?

On that note, Is it worth writing in to the council? the road definitely should have been closed, i Had to tow my Bike back to Auckland.

All that damage.Were you doing 30.must assume it was a 30 zone and had signs out as such.If not and seal was 2 mins old and not rolled then it should have been a 30 zone.

It was a 30 zone and i was doing 20. not rolled at all, was just layed out in front of us. If i had known it would have stuck and fucked my bike up that much i would have stopped and turned around. Felt sorry for the Harleys behind and in front of me. When i stopped in Rotorua, i managed to pull out two full plastic bags of Stones from my bike. Fucking crazy I tell you.

Sounds to me like they should have done one side and gone single lane then did the other side like every road works i have ever seen.You should write a letter and ask if they would like a quote to repair your bike.Why were they letting vehicles onto it prior to rolling and letting it cool?

I took mine to a radiator repair shop in Newmarket. No idea if they were any good or not, but they fixed it no worries.

If you choose a specialty radiator shop my advice though is to take the radiator off and take it in, they're probably not used to pulling them off bikes.

Explain your problem to your insurance coy. Also remember ... 30 km's is only the maximum speed in the roadworks. A few metres of such should have indicated otherwise.

Yes ... a letter with photos to that council can't hurt. With an estimate of costs to repair.

Just took it off now, bloody hard work. hmm ok, i could Google i suppose..

Bikes not insured, i could take photos of everything but i don't have the bags of stones damn it.

you can often get them repaired, but pics of the damage would be helpful.
for what its worth, A mate of mine stacked an 08 ninja. we sourced for him a new radiator, radiator mounts, fan, wiring, and hoses, shipped, for under $100 NZ$ from ebay, which may be a better idea.

I also recommend investing in a radiator guard to avoid this kinda thing in the future - you can make one yourself out of mesh, or get all arty and shit, and have someone make a a custom one that looks trick - it wouldnt cost you very much.

I dount writing to the council will do fuckall - they will say that they lowered the limit around roadworks to prevent damage/accidents etc etc

Yeah... I was doing 20lm/h rather than 30 and still managed to fuck my bike up. simple fact is they should NOT have been letting Vehicles drive down the road without completing more of the paving process, and i wasn't the only one who was kicking up a fuss.

Price up a new rad, and for fuck sakes get a rad guard

- even if its just a basic bit of mesh.

When I was working in auckland I used these guys exclusively because there work was so good, never had a problem with anywork they did. This was both holed and accident damaged repairs. there pricing is good as well.

Your big mistake was not letting all the Harleys go first - then the road would have been nicely rolled.

It amazes me that 'fixing' or repairing a road in NZ entails pouring tar on the existing surface followed by a truck load of shingle. There are so many roads around here done in that manner that are falling apart.

Ended up taking to them anyway thanks mate, only worked around the corner. Cheers for that.
