$450 really only gets you a helmet. Or a jacket.

I got a HJC helmet new for $225 and it's pretty decent. I've worn it doing over 200kmh and it sits on my head very nicely. $80 will get you decent gloves, and $200 should get you an entry level jacket.

If you want to save more money then buy a second hand jacket off Trademe.

Guys you do realise the OP rides an Intruder.

http://www.1tonne.co.nz/content/1/ $450 gets you the lid, jacket & gloves.

I've read many posts on here from satisfied 1-tonne customers. Besides, the stuff is endorsed by Shaun Harris

I've worn mine at almost 500 km/hr ... but the Air New Zealand cabin crew made me take it off ...

1tonne is good.. also CNELL (look them up on trademe)

The nerve cordura gear is as good as anything. I'd get the jacket and pants from them (no leakey around the crutch), and the helmet and gloves from 1tonne (the helmets are good, for 140, and the gloves are seriously good)

The leather jacket sounds like good value and that still leaves 2 hundy for the gloves...

if you haven't already, pop into your local dealers and see what they have too. I'm not big-sized, and sometimes they have old stock on sale, esp for those smaller sized outfits. I got my helmet on half-price at $300, synthetic entry level jacket at about just over 100 (same with pants at another shop), and gloves at $80.

So that's close to your budget. Sure you can find something cheaper second-hand too! Just wouldn't recommend any second-hand helmets!

+1 to the LS2 for a low cost helmet.

Just re-reading your post, what to look out for:

helmet - arguably most of your budget should be devoted here. There's a few threads here posting about ratings, and what you may look for safety-wise. I based my purchase on Sharp ratings - and bought a high-as-i-can star rating. Have a try on some of them, cos different brand helmets fit your head differently. Ask the dealer for help on how to select the right size, fitting etc. Should be firm, and as long as its tight but doesn't give you headaches..

Jackets - from what I was told, difference between them in price is the comfort, warmth, design. As long as it has good armor, its fine to start off with the entry-level stuff. Then there's the leather vs synthetic, which I think with your budget.. don't think you'll get any leathers unless its a second hand?

Gloves - not sure on this one.. though there are two types, the well padded ones, or the thinner that you can 'feel' more with. You probably want to try them on before you purchase.

    Hope that helps!

Oh I forgot about ls2! Definitly check out trademe for jackets, but please don't buy a second hand helmet. Even a cheap brand new one is better than a higher level second hand one. After all, if you come off, it has to protect some precious cargo!
