TS185 is difficult to get into 1st gear

I've put the correct amount of the right oil in the gearbox, but it's still very difficult to get it into 1st gear even with the engine turned off. Even when the engine is warm is usually takes at least 5 attempts before I can get it into 1st gear. The other gears are all fine and shifting is no problem. It has only once slipped out of 1st gear into neutral. I've checked that the gear shifter isn't touching anything like the crank case. What's wrong with the gearbox?!

Have you tried adjusting the clutch?

I haven't tried adjusting the clutch yet, not really sure how to go about it.

2 possabilitys if the others don't sort the porb...

1 - the claws on the selecter arm are worn so its not
grabing the pins in the end of the selecter drum..

2 - the selecter arm is in 2 bits L shaped theres a spring
at the pivit... if that spring has lost its strength the claws
will not be held against the pins in the end of the selecter drum
with enough force to grab the pin to rotate the drum..
At that point when in nutral there is a half pin so the selcter arm
has less throw on the selecter drum each side of nutral 1st / 2nd gear
thats why its easy to miss 2nd and hit nutral at that point...
The detent wheel / gear indexer also oparates on those pins at the end
of the selecter drum..so the spring on that also a possability...

    3 - maybe a bit of 1 & 2...

There is usually an adjuster on the handlebar end. (often one at both ends)

Most likely ... the cable is stretched to the point it is no longer adjustable ...

FJ rider is probably right, check the cable first.
the adjustment on the lever will be obvious. after that, follow the cable down, and just before if goes to the engine you should see the cable held in a clasp with a couple nuts on it - this is your other adjustment.

A new cable shouldnt cost you more than a couple jugs of DB.

I would suggest your clutch is preventing you from selecting first. Might pay to adjust it to see if that helps.

It's a good idea to check your indicator levels too ...

And while you've got it in pieces ... a new power band would be good ...

If I put a limited edition gold power band it it then the VTEC kicks in twice as hard.

You're confusing it with the blue one ... the red one just increases the compression ...
