    Unhappy Yamaha SRX250 seizure

    Hi everyone,

    I can feel the heads shaking already, my father picked up a 1990 SRX250 a couple months ago with the intention of learning but later decided he was too old.

    So on Monday I got my learners license and promptly went to his place to pick up the bike and start getting some practice. I hvae being doing so for the last few days driving a few kilometres each day.

    Today on the way to work I started to lose power, I pulled over thinking it might be gas so switched to reserve tank, it started alright and I kept riding. another kilometre or so down the road the engine seized suddenly and came to an abrupt halt.

    I looked down to the oil window and could see only a little in the bottom,

    It was the first time I checked out the oil, I had stupidly I assumed it would be fine until I get it serviced on monday which is my day off.

    Any advice on what damage I would have done and where I should go from here?

    I was hoping on filling it up with oil and transporting it home tonight, (its currently parked up in a church) is this a reasonable thing to do?

    Any help appreciated, I have no idea what I'm doing.

    Well, even though it's probably past its best, I would still trailer it back to mission HQ rather than ride it doing more damage.

    Take the valve cover off and take some good macro pics of the cam lobes, lets see if they've taken a beating. Might as well wait until you have a complete list, but you'll probably be after main and big end bearings, a gasket set, an oil filter, and a piston and ring. Hopefully the crank and camshafts aren't wasted!

    Now having said that, it's probably not worth it, as I'm guessing if you're having it serviced, then rebuilding the engine might be more work than you're capable of... whilst the parts might not be too bad (being a single there's only one of everything but cams), the labour will add up.

    I went down in my lunch break and topped it up with a bit of oil, and turned it over a few times, it started running but is clearly not very healthy.


    Ill get a trailer this evening and get it towed home, I might be able to have a friend do the labour for me in exchange for a couple boxes of beers so I'll get him around to have a look.

    Yep, she's a keeper


    Start with the cam cover... it's easy to put back on so you can flog it on trademe if it's a total mess in there. If it's not rooted the top end, delve a little deeper

    you'll be lucky if you haven't a) blown the head gasket and b) welded the rings to the cylinder walls.

    better luck next time.

    Is it insured ? if insured do as the munter did down dunners and push it off a wharf saying it was stolen, just don't post it on youtube or kiwibiker as the munter did.

    Way to go! Now you can justify a WR450 motor. Shouldn't cost more than $1500-$2000 landed from the states, and all of a sudden, your SRX is capable of overtaking on the motorway.

    Seriously though, if the oil is in the window, the level is not the cause for the seizure. Tell yer workmate to shut her face.
