    Rusty Nuts Grand Challenge 2012

Just read on the Rusty Nuts website that the Grand Challenge has been canned for this year. I'm gutted. It's the highlight of my riding year.

Thinking about setting up an alternative ride on the same weekend, covering the same distance, but with less formal organisation. Anyone keen to be involved?

    Cheers

Yeah, it's a shame - got my leave booked etc. Mate and I are probably gonna do something else, but it'll probably just be a ticky-tour.

    Hmmm. Chatto Creek...

I too am desperately disconsolate and disappointed about the Grand Challenge's cancellation.

    There there

Same thoughts as you Skinny, I figured that there would be a few of us who would say fuck it, and still do something regardless...

Jantar: wrong time of year unfortunately... If it was nearer the TT, then I could be tempted into extending my stay... but then, who really needs an excuse to ride? I'm enjoying my yearly trips south, exploring a little bit more every time

    Alternative Option

I think I've come across a suitable/viable alternative!....at least for the Welly Riders anyway.

    The Four Points!!

This ride has been going for some years but I've never done it as it clashes with the GC. My proposal is to do as a weekend ride.

We leave from Caltex Rimutaka at around 0200 Saturday morning and ride the 675Km to Te Araroa, then continue straight to Houhora which is 1549Km.....but I'm sure we could find another 60Km if that's important.

After a well earned sleep, it's only 700-800Km down to the 'Naki and 1100Km to Welly!!

We then only have to follow-up a week or two later with a scoot over to Lake Ferry then up to Palmy for a night of revellry!? whose Inn?

Sounds tempting. Small groups, happy to ride together as groups should see everybody get to where they need to be.

    Buggar alright....

And what other rallys will sucumb to the "Police State" we are now living in...where the mere opportunity to break the law makes you guilty, a police target...

Glad Chatto creek is still on, and the four corners....what about next years TT?

???....but you live in Urkadurkaland.....don't you?

The Powers that be aren't interested in the C1KC either. I guess 1,000Km is just a day ride....and of course, it's run by totally responsible hoons!!??

Unfortunately the Chato Creek conflicts with our Muscular Dystrophy Ride, so unlikely I'll be able to make that one.

That's too bad. I've already sussed out the route, and this year is a neat 1025 miles of the most scenic parts of the South Island, and no doubling back like I've had the last two years into Karamea, Milford and Glenorchy.

dunno what time of year you're looking at, but look into the southernrider escapade. I think its around 1200km, and no reason you cant add to it.
its more of an 'in your own time' thing - though Im sure several do it in one hit

A few of the locals and I have done the last couple, it's a quality trek - we average around 6-700km a day. 5 days in total.

We usually do the southern point (Lake Ferry) on a preceding weekend, and then do the other three points over the Labour weekend break. Always a brilliant ride.

And I like to escape back to a "free" country to recover from time to time. And I try to time my escapes to coincide with a good bike rally.
