Why I am in NZ

Had a bit of bad news from South Africa, one of my ex-school teachers was shot dead in an attempted hijacking in the town where we used to live.
Here is part of the story from the newspaper:
EX-DEPUTY headmaster of Empangeni High School, Johannes Venter (65) was fatally shot in an attempted hijacking in Empangeni on Thursday morning.
Venter and his wife, Lizzie, were getting into their vehicle, a Toyota Corolla, after visiting a nursery in Biyela Street.
Three unknown suspects alighted from a red VW Golf with a ND registration number and approached their vehicle in an attempt to hijack it.
For reasons unknown, one suspect fired a shot at Venter, wounding him in the right side of the chest.
Venter immediately sped off in the direction of the Empangeni Garden Clinic.
It appears he lost control about 200 metres from the clinic and his vehicle ended up on the side of the road in a grass field.
Paramedics said Venter died at the crash scene from loss of blood.
His wife was taken to the clinic for shock treatment and sustained no injuries.
The suspects fled the scene and are still at large.

I'm often told SA is a wonderful place to visit... but a book is much safer.

SA is a wonderful place, there are still safe (ish) areas, but not worth the worry and stress living there. We have made a promise to go back to visit every 2 years, went in Sept 2004, will be visiting again in Sept 2006.
This killing will not make the news, not even the regional radio stations or newspapers because it is not something uncommon!

With StoneChucker being from SA I've herd some interesting stories, particularly about gun fire at night.....the bad guys had the automatic weapons while the cops were the single shots.

Went to Joburg when I was 9yo.....can't remember much, only the Kruger National Wildlife Park....did a 4 day tour.....massive place.

Used to live in those parts of that continent when I was young (pre school) ...... you actually needed professionaly trained guard dogs and to live in a gated community....

After dark we usually stayed home unless it was a planned trip with the company of other families, etc.......

When they burgle you in those places they don't do it like on TV here (2 catch a thief)...... they do it like Allied Pickford the careful movers... They'd take your house too if it wasn't built into the ground.

Guy from work is from SA. He and his family left after his sister got car jacked at gun point.
A former high-schooler teacher of mine was from there too.
SA people are kind and such. Just shame the countries so dangerous otherwise it'll definitely be worth a visit.

Could be worse, could be living in Zimbabwe. But then again I often seem to hear that SA is on the road to becoming the next Zimbabwe. Shit to hear that mate, I'm so glad my family and I left when we did. NZ is much better

I think that people should remember that every country has it challenges and South Africa is currently experiencing massive change especially in the socio economic department.

All I am prepared to say it is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, it has so much to offer, from the actual land and its beauty, to the people and the amazing cultures you can experience. I would encourage anyone who is interested to go and see and experience, know for yourself.

Crime is high at the moment. That will change, so if fear stops you from seeing the place, there will be a time when you will be able to see and experience the amazing gifts the country offers.

Yes I am no longer in SA, but my love and my pride are very high and will stay that way. My reasons for leaving were never about fear or crime.

I think one of the difference between Zimbabwe and SA, (besides all the political crap which we won't go into), is that the crime in SA is a lot more violent... a lot more people being murdered.

Sure, its dangerous in Zim, we were burgled 4 times in 6 months... that last 2 out of those 4 times were pointless as we had nothing, but they still broke in and stole what we had managed to accumilate in the few weeks since the last one...

The cops are just as shocking... my moms car was broken into, and we called the cops and they said "Don't touch the vehicle so we can get finger prints.... but can you come and fetch us as we have no transport"

I'd much rather be in Zim than SA (crime wise).

Yeah, sorry to hear that Al. we think the crime is bad here, but it's not until you hear about other countries you know you're in such a beautiful country as New Zealand.
