I'll agree with you there, the only thing missing is the salute... It's like I've always said, I'd rather deal with the Mongrel Mob and Black Power than the white supremacists - those guys - like Tamaki - are really scary. At least the MM and BP don't hate Europeans/Asians/etc. just because they come from a different race to them. And as for Tamaki's views on gays - that march (with all those kids taking part) should have been a wake-up call to the rest of the country.Originally Posted by unhingedlizard

I think it's interesting if you turn off the sound and watch him speaking. The body language gives an impression of someone in power, smag comfortable and manipulative.
I have to admit I know little enough about the guy, that church, and his policies, but I also learned to trust my instincts, and they're telling me he's a man whose words don't convey the whole truth, they don't sit 100% squarely with his actions, his real intentions are yet to be revealed, and I'm probably not going to like a lot of them.
Watch this space - I hope I'm wrong.

yea, I dont care who says anydifferent, but that march reminded me of the old war propoganda videos that they made us watch at high school about nazi rallys.
Anyway, since when would Jesus Christ teach intolerance?
The real mystery is how come that fat bastard Hurley has never lost any weight.

What's the panic about Bishop Brian? He leads a small group of very dependant inadequates who would be lost without someone to tell them what to think. The good thing about average Kiwis is that we're too apathetic to be taken in by the likes of Adolph Tamaki.
Here's a prediction; he will be discovered to have a gay lover posing as a Church official. He'll resign and leave NZ to rediscover himself in San Francisco. He'll set up a Gay Bikers for God group and live happily ever after.

Back on topic, political parties based around a particular religion scare the crap out of me - Density Church and Christian Heritage spring to mind here. I would be equally worried by a Muslim political party or even a pagan political party.
It is bad enough that standard political parties have individual members who push for legislation of their own moral issues and attempt to legislate what is "right" in their view.
We already have "courtesy" legislated (most of our traffic rules - give way rules especially - fall under that category) and legislation against discrimination which does not in anyway stop discrimination (just makes 'em liars as well as bigots when they come up with a plausible "reason").
We have repealed a few laws that were based on someone else's morality (the laws that outlawed homosexuality) and there are still some in place that date back to earlier days.
I'm not talking about laws against molesting children - such acts harm the children concerned and are laws against harming someone (like rape and assault laws), not "morality" laws.
If a religion-based political party gained power, it would be able to enact laws based on its own interpretation of morality - and would do so. The motive may well be, in their own eyes, "for our good", but the fact is that not everyone has the same interpretation of morality - not even within alllied religions. i.e. not all Christian churches agree on morality (and generally label each other as "not true Christians" but my definition of the term is "anyone who in some way purports to follow/interpret the teachings of Christ", which includes Catholics, several flavours of Protestant, Jehovahs Witnesses, Seventh Day Adventists and Mormons among hundreds of others). Not all Muslims agree on morality either, same with the various Jewish sects and the pagans are the most diverse of the lot.
What if the LDS ("Mormons") suddenly exhibited overt political ambitions. formed a party and got elected. Part of their legislated morality could see the outlawing of cigarettes and caffeinated drinks - as per their belief that the body is a temple and not to be defiled. Now I know a lot of Christians who would not be impressed at missing out on their morning coffee and smoke. Or what if the Jehovahs Witnesses gained power and decided for our own good to outlaw blood transfusions.
I am not dissing either of those faiths - they are well entitled to believe as they will and they are not likely to ever try to become the law makers in this or any other country - I am merely using them as an example of how different interpretations of the same book (the Mormons, so far as I am aware, take their eschewing of caffeine and cigarettes from the Bible, not the Book of Mormon) can impact upon others who have a different interpretation of that book or don't follow any flavour of Christianity at all.
I would be worried enough if an established "mainstream faith" (be it Christian, Islamic, Jewish or Buddhist) gained power. Even more so if it were a johhny-come-lately cult based on the charisma of its leader - "Cult of Personality". I have seen enough of Tamaki's rantings to be very worried of the consequences of him gaining political power - extra-marital sex would most likely become a crime in this country and turn about 90% of the adult population into criminals overnight.
Even if I were a Christian, I would be concerned by Tamaki gaining political power. As a non-Christian, with my own ideas on morality, I am totally opposed to Tamaki and his political aspirations. Anyone who votes themself "Bishop" and ordains himself is a narcissistic monomaniac - and narcissism and monomania are symptoms of psychosis.

Tamaki is a televangelist, through and through, right down to the expensive clothes and toys.Originally Posted by unhingedlizard
He reminds me of a song by the comedian Ray Stevens (who is also a very devout Christian and quite opposed to televangelists)
"Would Jesus Wear a Rolex on His Television Show?"
The song goes on about he's watching this televangelist on the idiot box and is just about to dig out his wallet and make a pledge of money when he suddenly realises this guy is asking him for twenty dollars when he's wearing ten thousand on his arm! Then goes to the chorus asking if Jesus would wear a Rolex on his television show, would he drive a cadillac, would his wife wear fur coats and diamonds...
A great satire - funny and very "telling" all at once.
Brian Tamaki got rich spouting religious rhetoric on TV and asking for donations "to do God's work" - apparently God is in the business of supplying Tamaki with expensive suits and flash motorcycles and other pretty toys.
The guy is a lying, thieving creep, fleecing people by posing as a man of similar beliefs, when all he truly believes is that he should make himself as rich as possible. Logically, no televangelist/church leader who makes themselves rich in that fashion actually believes in God. If they did believe in God, they would believe God would see through their motives and consign them to the flames (Matthew 7 has a lot on false prophets and such) and so they would be too scared to do so. Ergo, anyone who does it is a non-believing conman out to fleece what they perceive to be "stupid and credulous believers".
