Rather difficult question to answer

bike does have a problem with third gear, at low revs it tends to jump out, i just miss 3rd altogether and go from 2nd to 4th, its fine shifting down though.

I know its almost impossible to give the 100% right answer with out more info/looking at the bike. But whats likely to cause this, Does it sound expensive to fix or cheap if you do it yourself?

Make and model of bike would be helpful, or you could take to an outdated black mechanic specialising in outdated black bikes.

Dogs are worn or a shift fork is bent. I'm going with the dogs being worn.

this would be my diagnosis based on what youve said too. Id lean towards dogs more than a bent fork though.

its likely to be the dogs if its jumping out of gear.
Alternatively a maladjusted gear change lever can cause this, if the fulcrum is not correct for your foot it often doesn't slot in correctly.
Had it on a few bikes, and with a twiddle of the 10mm nut its all good again!
