Just of late, I can take or leave it...it can be (at times) over six weeks between drinks.
In saying that, I had 6 Appletons and a few Port chasers last night...
That was the last of any Rum in the house, not in any hurry to by anymore..may just have the odd Port now and again.

LOL. Man these posts confirm there are some fucked up people on KB!

The drink - take it or leave it - I will admit to taking a lot more after the earthquakes here but I can leave it as I see fit.

Sounds like some of you are relying on it too much - it should not define who you are. Lay off it and go for a decent ride , preferably not to a pub!

My stupid ex's reasoning that my drinking was a problem, was I'd drink until I was numb and couldn't feel anymore. My way of running from our problems. Unfortunately that didn't stop after we broke up. Then I stacked my mountain bike again, and it was one of the reasons I started drinking more.

Thanks for the lime+soda trick. I'll try that next time I'm out
Here's a tip: buy a Sodastream machine and make your own Soda water. Add a slice of lemon or lime, and you have a really really nice drink. If you have difficulty sleeping, cut out alcohol, all caffeine and all sugary shit drinks (take your sodastream bottle, drink fizzy water). Eat regularly and do some exercise. try not to be a stress-monkey.

Oh, about alcohol: I am indifferent to it. I do like beer and wine though. occasionally a gin, and a Jack Daniels. but if it tasted the same and had no alcohol, I'd still be happy.

also as I have gotten older, I drink a lot less, but can afford better. For example, I will drink one beer that costs $10 abottle, instead of a six pack of swill for $10.

The biggest problem with drinking is that it gives you an excuse to be a total asshole. You get to break shit, be obnoxious and offensive, hurt yourself and other people, say stuff you'll really regret the next day or do stuff you'd never want to do sober...... and you get to wake up the next morning feeling like absolute crap and just blame it on the Alcohol.

If you did the same stuff without the drink, you'd rapidly be without friends and/or in jail. I find this an interesting and somewhat depressing comment on society.

That said, I still enjoy a drink within limits a few times a month, and beyond limits a few times a year.

You might have stopped drinking but not being a wanker

Hey GM - take this with a grain of salt if you want - I'm not bothered either way and only responded 'cos you asked.

You potentially have a big problem brewing. A few years back I got super sick and was forced to either face up to it or else. Funny thing I thought I was eating well (cos I'm a type 1 diabetic). However for my body - I was killing myself and when you are doing that you are not always making good decisions either. The toxics you are living off do make it harder to concentrate.

If you think you currently have an issue with alcohol - stop it. Make a commitment to be dry (say) 3 months and pile evey effort into training for your mountain biking. ie its the reason you are doing it.

Stop thinking about booze and start thinking about biking. You can't fight a thought so stop thinking about booze and replace those thoughts with other things.

Also - clean up your diet. Try going vege while you are doing without booze relearn how to cook.

If you live clean for a few months THEN and only then will you be able to a rational decision about stuff.

I'm down to 2 coffees a day MAX and about to drop to 1. I've seriously cut back my booze to red wine and only on weekends after being sober a year and only just started back on meat (the list of I can't eat is so epic meat had come back). Honestly, coffee, booze, energy drinks etc etc is just asking for it. Think cancer, diabetes etc etc

But the main point is just stop it now - in 3 months see how you feel. I'll bet you $100 that if you stop for 6 months you will be fitter, sharper and happier.

(ps - booze is terrible for sleep - sure it gets you to sleep but you wake up after a couple of hours wide awake)

Booze might make you fall asleep quicker, but it seriously reduces your quality of sleep. Your liver spends all night trying to process the alcohol which degregates(?) your sleep quality. Then you hit the bottle againg next night because you're so tired. And so on.....

I love booze, but quality of sleep is one reason I don't drink as much as i used to. I'd suggest looking into other strategies for sleeping. I might be able to give you some pointers if you're interested.

+1 Quality instead of quantity. I also apply the same thinking to food.

I am a non-drinker most of the time (except when I fall off the wagon). This is due to poor choice of ancestors. In old age I have developed a condition known as Primary Schlerozing Cholingitis. Nobody really knows how this happens but there is evidence that it may well be familial hence my reference to poor ancestral choice.

This condition causes the bile ducts to inflame, scar and narrow, mostly because the bile attacks the lining of the ducts as it passes through. It's a kind of auto-immune condition. All this adds up to poor drainage of bile through the liver. Slow draining bile attacks the liver and causes it to become fibrotic - much like alcohol induced cirrhosis. So any extra stress on the liver (like that caused by consumption of alcomohol) exacerbates the fibrotic liver condition. Eventually, the liver will totally fuck up and you die. Or get a liver transplant. Or develop liver cancer and die anyway. One way or another, you're fucked once you get this. However, the disease's progress is slow so death never feels all that close.

In theory, I should have been dead two years ago according to the statistics relating to this condition. But so far it hasn't happened. Maybe Mr Death is scared to try it on. Or, more likely, I am further up the spread of those statistics. So I ride my motorbike most days so as to make the most of the time I have available to do it. My liver man said to me about four years ago "enjoy life while you can!" So I went out and got another bike. Obvious choice! Course I thought I'd be dead before I ran out of money but dammit, it looks now as though I'll run out of money before I die. Bastard!

Now I have always been a wine enthusiast and I do miss drinking wine. But I don't miss the alcohol. In fact I thrive far better when I don't imbibe. Sleep is far better, no hangovers, no problems driving - ever - and much more on the ball during the day. I go for many many months without a drink but every so often I decide that I am well and that one little drinky wouldn't hurt. And then I have to stop again.

Oh well, what the hell. My ex was one of the most health conscious people around and she died before me so there ya go.

Must plan a decent ride for tomorrow and make the most of this fabulous autumn weather. (But no drinks when I get home!)
