My first time. Looking forward to it. Serviced the bike, needed a new battery. Just as well I caught that now and not early one freezing morning! Also new chain and sprockets, new rear brake pads, needed to also replace the rear wheel bearings and a new rear tire. Hmmm $1200 and I haven't left home yet .

Heading across the strait Wed night to Blenheim. Then to Tekepo Thursday to meet up with friends, Ranfurly Friday night, camping on site Sat night, then head as far north as I can get Sunday and across the strait Monday.

    One week to go.

I have lost one of my winter weight gloves, so if you see a big frank thomas glove anywhere, its mine.

So you took a test ride which was good planning.

Really, its possible to do a lot to ease the journey without much effort. Wear thermals and windproof trou/jacket. Warehouse cheap rainwear does the job if necessary.

I used hippo hands which are sold to farmers - they are huge overgloves which fit on the handlebars completely covering the levers and grips. But you could use any strong fabric or thick plastic bags to get the same result.

Hotgrips are lovely but I only got them after 20 years of riding in the deep south. Nice but not essential.

Keeping your core body temp up is crucial.

It may feel silly to wear enough gear but you only need it until you arrive. Keep warm, arrive alive.

What's the condition of Danseys pass?

Thinking about taking the road bike over it, I know it was suitable many years ago but now?
Its not the destination that is important its the journey.
