There was still snow to quite low levels around the hills here this morning, but it doesn't look too thick. On that basis the danseys is probably rideable if your bike is fitted with Knobbies. I would try it just now on road tyres.

I'll be leaving home just before mid-day on saturday and heading to Chatto Creek then on to Wedderburn. Back past the BM site where I'll give a long loud tootle on the horn and on to Alex for a beer and BBQ.

How is the weather in Otago at present? Wellington is bloody cold, light dusting of snow on the hills behind Whitemans Valley, same on the hills behind Wainuiomata.
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.

Thanks Jantar, I might revise my plans and give a loud tootle as I go past your place on Friday, will see what the day brings.
Its not the destination that is important its the journey.

Light coating of snow on the hills to low levels. Cold, and another southerly due tomorrow. By Friday it should be clear and warm during the day and very frosty overnight. Another front due late saturday or sunday, should pass up the west coast and generally miss Central Otago.

so what is the best route to take
Not keen on snow and hills as a combination,
And the google maps route seems to want to do that
SO from Christchurch to the brass, which is the safest route,
allowing for 6 - 7 hrs including stops to get there on sat
Leaving at approx 7am , if not earlier from chch

You have 3 options. Down through the center via Tekapo, over the Lindis to Alex then through to Oturehua: Down SH1 to Palmerston and over the Pig Route: SH1 to Oamaru, up the Waitaki to Omarama and over the Lindis.

All routes should be good as long as you plan on arriving mid to late afternoon.

The lowest Altitude route ... and shortest (sealed) route is via the Pig-Root.

Via Tekapo and Omarama is by far the most scenic ...

All depends on the weather conditions in either area ... on the day(s) prior to the weekend.

    Then
Down SH1 to Palmerston and over the Pig Route
sounds like it would be the best route for me,
and I guess that it will be rather popular with a lot of others riders coming from the northern direction.
So my thinking is, that if I just pootle along at a comfortable speed for me,
I would just have to follow all the bikes that pass me,
    and I would get there
