Check that you have private messaging turned on:

Go to 'Settings' (at top RH side of page) on the page that opens go to 'General Settings' (on the left side of page about half way down, under 'My Settings/My Account') on the next page that opens, scroll down until you find the heading 'Private Messaging' and see what options you have checked. Once you've changed it scroll to very bottom of page and click 'Save Changes'.

Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that, who cares? ...He's a mile away and you've got his shoes

    Hi

Checked my settings for PM and all set to allow PMs

When I try to send a PM i get a warning that says

Your site involvement insn't enough to use the Private Message system ...

I suspect I need to make a certain number of posts before my " site involvement " target is meet .

Probibly to stop people spamming members I suspect

Correct, it's to try and stop spammers spamming people. I can't find the relevant info, but I believe it's 5 or 10 posts.

Bear in mind not all posts count towards your post count, Rant and Rave does not, for example.

Post count of five, plus member for five days.

As mentioned, it's an anti-spammer measure - it give the mods a bit of breathing space to spot the spammers before they cut loose in a major way.
