    Headin south for the winter!

    Well for 3 weeks anyway...

Me and the little woman are going to see some relatives in Nelson and Wesport in the middle of July and thought bugger it, while we are down here might as well go to the bottom... We will be cruising on the mighty Mitsi Magna so was just wondering what sort of interesting places you guys can point out to us that might be worthy of a look and to meet up with some long suffering KB members... Also roads or places not to be at that time of the year

    Map of journey roughly... https://maps.google.co.nz/maps/ms?ms...a695c7c0&msa=0

Would be wicked to see some bike racing or track days at some of the southern tracks too... Any ideas will be considered... Am a drinker too so beers anywhere would be good too.. Also cheap accomodation that you may know of like cabins, motels blah blah

    Cheers!

P.s will I be needing snow chains or are they just for nana's that can't correct a skid or too ;D

P.p.s Oh and the woman wants to see some seals too, up as close as you can without being eaten and or arrested

Probably not going to need chains, unless you are going skiing, but I always like to carry chains any way. And I wouldn't worry about coming up sh1 through Gore to dunedin, fuck all to see or do. Instead go through the catlins to balclutha and then north to dunedin. Heaps of seals and shit like that through there. And you can see the real most southernmost point of the mainland instead of bluff. BE WARNED, you will regret not having your bike when you get on some of those roads.

There were heaps of seals at the rest area just out of kaikoura when I was there, they get abit angry when you try and root them though.

Take mums car up the steepest street in Dunedin bro.

Accomodation, we just stayed at motorcamps, they all had cheap cabins.

And since you are going up the crown range you need to stop at the guy with all the monster trucks (if he is still there) its behind the bra fence in my profile pic, just below where they used to have the race to the sky i think.

    P.S. take a blanket softcock.

Plan your trip to travel down the West coast from Westport and you will love it, The east coast roads are boring as hell. Chains really should be carried because they block the passes and wont let you through without them if it's snowing.

There has been a dumping of snow on the Crown range ... but it will come and go between now and then (probably a few times)

Top 10 camping grounds abound .. and have varying priced cabins. Mostly good.

The monster trucks are still there ... but the Bra fence isn't ... blame the PC mob for it's removal ...

The road to the Snow Farm (and other ski-fields) will be open and well worth a look ... just for the views they afford at the top. (a road toll may be asked, but well worth it)

AND (in the intrest of keeping your sanity) ... do not count the number of times you say (or mutter) ...I wish I was on the bike ...

Probably blame Gordon for the bra fence(seen Target lately :/ ) Was down there in 96 (also in a car ) so I know not to drive myself nuts with the 'wish I was on bike' scenario... One day I'll get it down there (Or my cuz in Nelson might let me take his Ducati for a blat, but he seen how I ride and I probably doubt it heh)
