    DRZ250 starter clutch jamming?

My mates DRZ250 seems to have the starter clutch jam on a bit. If you go to kick start it the starter motor turns to. It makes a bang when it fires and when it stops. Guess the starter clutch is sticking.

Presume the starter clutch sits behind the stator and flywheel?

Quite right from the sounds of it, and yea clutch is located behind flywheel so you will need the puller to remove it. As you say your kicking it anyway you could just remove the gear between the starter motor and starter clutch and use as kick start only. Cheap fix for ya. Starter clutch assys are not cheap from memory, ballpark $500 upwards.

I think he bought it because of the electric starter.

    I enjoy kick starting mine......

Guess he will be up for a few dollars then.

Yea saldy i have seen alot of starter clutches wear/fail and none of them are cheap or easy fixes really. Havnt found a good dodge yet that lasts. Sad thing is that the kick start lever on the 250 is quite shorty making it slightly more difficult to kick start.

Ok, so its a common fault. I will let him know. Is there any reason they fail?

Mostly as far as we could tell, was from infrequent oil changes (at some point in its life), excessive use of starter or over heating. Most of these reasons were from when they had been used as farm bikes for dairy farming.

Also they had issues with idling which, although unconfirmed by the manufacturer seemed to go away when a new stator was fitted, but many would return with the same fault within 6 months or so, again due to over heating and infrequent oil changes/ servicing. First signs of this is they appear to eat spark plugs, almost weekly. New plug will fix for a short period but then play up again.

Just my experiences and might not be typical of this model but did prob a dozen or more with these types of fault.
