A notorious Russian spammer was found dead in his Moscow apartment Sunday after being beaten about the head, according to the Interfax news service.
Vardan Kushnir, 35, headed an English-language learning centre and carried out an aggressive internet advertising strategy, sending millions of e-mails every day.
Angry internet users fought back by publishing the centre's telephone number on the web and advertising it as a place for cheap sex or bargain real estate.
The strategy failed to deter Kushnir, who ran the American Language Center, a Moscow-based school that taught English.
The St. Petersburg Times reported that the killer or killers had apparently rifled through Kushnir's belongings and left his home in disarray.
Authorities refused to comment on a possible motive.
While spamming is legal in Russia, politicians are working ways to protect Russian internet users.
